The idea of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1898 after a fire on Main Street in which 12 buildings, along with the Presbyterian Church, were destroyed. Following in the footsteps of that fire, the City Council worked on the necessary legislation and a constitution and by-laws where written and four years later the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department was born. Orginally there were 3 companies in the Laurel proper; one at 8th and Montgomery, one at 5th and Montgomery and one on Washington Blvd by the Little Tavern. The first Fire Chief was David M. Fischer. It wasn't until 1935 that the Company consolidated into one location at the Old Phelps and Shaffer store on 9th and Montgomery. With much needed growing room, the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department moved, in 1954, across the street to the old Laurel Elementary School No. 1. Today, the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department is housed on the corner of Cherry Lane and Van Dusen Road, in a building that they moved into in October of 1990. The current building contains offices, a gym, a kitchen, meeting rooms and bunk rooms for male and female fire fighters. | Requirements: We have a number of types of membership that you may be interested in, so check out the different classes we have to offer below: Regular EMS Only Junior Administrative Regular Members To become a Regular Member, you must be at least 18 years of age and interested in training to be Firefighters and/or EMTs. Personnel in this class of membership must pass a background investigation and physical, as well as meet minimum participation standards each year. Regular Members must complete a 12-month probationary period. Within eighteen months of joining the department, Regular Members must complete either Firefighter I (F/F I) or Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (EMT-B) and within 30 months, both must be completed. EMS Only Ever since the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department acquired an ambulance, we have always been on the lookout for people interested in Emergency Medical Service (EMS). They will not be expected to fight fires. Junior Members To become a Junior Member, you must be between the ages of 16 and 18 and must have parental approval. These members may take fire fighting training and participate in "Outside" fire fighting activities, but are prohibited from participating in any interior fire fighting or any other hazardous duties. Junior Members must maintain good grades in school (2.0 minimum) in order to participate in department activities or have full-time employment. Beltsville Volunteer Fire Department is actively recruiting EMS only members. EMTs at Beltsville VFD staff our ambulance and provide emergency medical care to patients. EMTs are also responsible for maintaining and stocking EMS equipment as well as writing patient care reports. No prior experience? No problem. Maryland EMT training is provided for free through the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. Graduates of the program gradate as a Nationally Registered EMT which is what many career fire departments look for when they are hiring. Are you an EMT in another state but looking for a place to get more experience? Beltsville has to EMS units that respond to almost five thousand calls per year. Calls range from BLS emergencies such as sick people, to gunshot wounds, to vehicular trauma and anything in between. To acquire a Maryland State EMT card, you will simply need to take a 24 hour Maryland EMT refresher course and take the Maryland BLS protocol test at the end of the course. From there, you will enter our in-station probationary EMT training that will familiarize you with our SOP's. LFVC offers many challenging situations from fires to motor vehicle accidents to sick and/or injured people. Your skills may be needed day or night, seven days a week, in any kind of weather, and very often under stressful and emotional circumstances. Yet these factors contribute to our profession being so personally rewarding. The personal rewards are many. Your sense of accomplishment when you help a sick person or help control a fire or perform a successful extrication at a motor vehicle accident, as a result of your training with us, will be beyond description. Your participation as a volunteer of LVFC will bring personal rewards and satisfaction, raise self esteem, and provide you with a sense of accomplishment and pride for a job well done. It also provides the community with a valuable service that has the potential to touch us all. However, becoming a member of the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department requires a commitment. Your decision to submit an application to join our organization should not be made hastily. The services provide by our volunteers requires trainings and numerous hours doing so. This training, as well as the safety and services we provide, are truly valuable to the citizens, businesses and visitors of our community. Wheaton Vol Rescue Sqd Inc
The Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad (WVRS) was formed in 1955 and has served the community of Wheaton and surrounding areas of Montgomery County, Maryland for almost 60 years. <br><br> We are a non-profit organization that is fully staffed by volunteers every evening, weekend, and holiday. We are in constant need of new members to become Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), paramedics, and firefighters. We are also in need of people who have expertise in bookkeeping, clerical, mechanical, and other related areas. | Requirements: Anyone over the age of 16 is eligible for membership at the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad. Minors between the ages of 16 and 17 will participate in our Cadet Program, where they will receive all of the necessary training to become an EMT, as well as assisting on ambulance calls, without having to spend school nights at the station. <br><br> A minimum commitment of approximately 80 hours per month is required. These hours consist of a weekly duty night (6:00PM to 6:00AM) and a shift every fourth weekend (except Friday and Sunday Crews). If you are not able to pull your duty you must secure someone to cover your shift. <br><br> Prospective operational members will be required to take and pass a physical examination and drug screening administered through Montgomery County. Assist in the maintenance and enhancement of hiking and biking trails in the Catonsville area. Volunteers will help with tasks such as clearing debris, repairing trail surfaces, and installing signage.

Volunteers are needed to collect art supplies, volunteer at events, and join as members to support the Baltimore County Arts Guild.

Volunteers are needed to prepare meals for 37 clients at the IW Women's Center. Meals should be dropped off at specified times. Students can earn SSL hours for homemade meals.
Catonsville Womens Giving Circle
As a Grant Liaison, volunteers will be paired with a nonprofit organization that received grants from the Catonsville Women's Giving Circle. The role involves contacting the nonprofit once or twice a month to check on needs and help organize responses.
