The Columbus Fire Department is always looking for individuals who are passionate about protecting their neighbors and their community. Are you ready to serve as volunteer firefighter! There is nothing more rewarding than serving your community as a volunteer firefighter. The Columbus Wisconsin Fire Department provides service to a geographical area of over 128 square miles. That service area includes the City of Columbus and seven rural surrounding townships. We want to hear from you! We consider ourselves a volunteer department, but our members are part-time City of Columbus employees. As a Columbus Fire Department firefighter, you are compensated for training and when responding to emergency incidents. | Requirements: Department trainings take place on Tuesday evenings starting at 6:30 PM. Members are required to attend a minimum of two department trainings a month. Minimum training requirements provided by Madison College (* CFD covers your training fees and compensates you for your time! ) - 60 HR entry level firefighter class (takes place first semester after hire) - 60 HR Firefighter I State Certification (recommended to be taken at your earliest convenience following your entry level class) - CPR / AED / First Aid Classes will also be provided Applicants must be 18 years of age by time of employment. Must live within the Columbus, Wisconsin fire district. Must not have any felony convictions within the last seven years or a disqualifying criminal history. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Paid-on call Firefighter Primary Job Elements: • Responds to emergency situations to perform fire suppression and rescue duties • Uses power and hand tools to perform forcible entry and ventilate burning buildings • Assists with salvage, overhaul, cleanup and evacuation activities as necessary • Provides crowd and traffic control at emergency scenes • Assists with vehicle extrication at automobile accidents • May drive and operate designated apparatus as necessary • At emergency scenes, administers CPR and/or First Aid as necessary • Assists with fire hose testing • Attends trainings, and meetings to remain current on fire suppression and rescue methods Secondary Job Elements: • Uses special knowledge and skills to deal with hazardous or life threatening situations, including those associated with: 1) the storage and transportation of flammable liquids, gases, toxic chemicals, petroleum products and other combustible materials; 2) vehicle roadway collisions, aircraft and railroad accidents, water and ice rescue, construction site accidents, confined space rescue, and other similar medical treatment emergencies; 3) all types of conditions and events that produce fire; and 4) behavioral characteristics associated assists with public fire prevention and education programs • Assists with public relation events • Promotes positive department image through positive public personal conduct • Other duties as requested | Requirements: Minimum Educational and Job Experience Requirements: • High school diploma or equivalent • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license • Knowledgeable and skills used in dealing with hazardous or life threatening situations • Must possess or attain Entry Level Firefighter certification training within first year of employment • Must possess or attain Firefighter I certification within two years of employment (current non-probationary firefighters are grandfathered, 10/04/2011) • Must attained CPR training at the dept. standard within the first year of employment Abilities Required: • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing • Ability to follow orders under stress • Ability to work effectively with department co-workers, other department employees and the public • Ability to perform emergency tasks and/or training which involves the performance of physically demanding work. Physically demanding work involves some combination of walking, running, climbing or jumping.
