POSITION SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, the part-paid firefighter performs advanced firefighting work in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires, responding to hazardous materials incidents and emergency calls which include special rescue situations such as vehicle and steep angle rescue. Work involves training for and participating in duties of protecting life and property through the performance of firefighting and emergency service activities. Part-paid firefighters are required to learn and participate in the operation of apparatus and the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke, fire, heat and cramped surroundings. Participation in incidents, training, public relations events, and station upkeep in accordance with District policy is required to remain employed. Although firefighting and emergency services work constitutes the primary and most difficult and responsible area of work, the part-paid firefighter is also expected to attend weekly drill for 2 hours. These drills consist of practice sessions dealing with various aspects of firefighting, rescue, and hazardous materials awareness. Time spent at the station may consist of studying, custodial care and a wide variety of maintenance of departmental facilities, apparatus and equipment. Work is usually performed in accordance with explicit instructions and well-defined procedures; however, performance of the work requires initiative and the exercise of independent judgment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Lieutenant or Captain. | Requirements: STANDARDS FOR FIREFIGHTERS Candidates for the position of firefighter shall (ORC § 124.42; ORC § 124.43): Be at least 18 years of age. Pass a physical examination showing that the person meets the physical requirements necessary to perform the duties of a firefighter. Not have been disqualified due to criminal convictions as set forth in ORC § 737.081. RESIDENCY Must live within the Portage Fire District coverage area (the Village of Oak Harbor, Salem Twp., Benton Twp.) or within 10 miles of 240 W. Water St., Oak Harbor, Ohio, with written permission of the Fire Chief of your jurisdiction of residence. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Responds to alarms of fire or other emergencies in accordance with District procedures. After being certified: drives apparatus, operates fire pumps, and auxiliary equipment. Responds to calls for emergency services, prepared to perform life saving techniques and other onsite care of victims if required. Responds to emergency calls for drowning, various rescue situations, accidents and natural or other catastrophes. Performs a wide variety of general custodial and maintenance work in the upkeep of District apparatus, equipment, and station. Cleans and washes walls and floors. Washes, hangs, and dries hose. Washes, cleans, and polishes apparatus. This listing of “Examples of Work Performed” is intended to describe the principal functions of the part-paid firefighter. The listing of examples, however, shall not be construed as a complete listing of miscellaneous, incidental or substantively similar duties which may be assigned during the normal operation of the Fire District. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS Obey and comply with District policies and procedures Willingness to perform other duties as deemed necessary. EXPERIENCE No experience is required. Part-paid firefighters are expected to complete and pass an approved Firefighter program within one year after joining the District. EDUCATION High School diploma or GED is required. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION Must possess and maintain a valid Ohio Driver’s license. TECHNICAL SKILLS Once certified, have the ability to drive a large fire apparatus during both the day and night, using depth perception and peripheral vision in emergency situations involving speed in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow. Once certified, have the ability to identify hazardous materials by code and color. SUPERVISION This employee is under the supervision of the Fire Chief and Company Officers of the District. PERSONAL RELATIONS In addition to regular contact with the general public and co-workers, employee must have the ability to communicate with a diverse range of people and deal with verbal and physical confrontations. WORKING CONDITIONS Ability to enter a building under adverse fire conditions which might include smoke, extreme heat, and no visibility, in full protective clothing, including air pack with face piece. Ability to search for fire victims (sometimes searching by feel only), while walking or crawling, and if victim is found, to drag or carry the victim to safety. Ability to perform firefighting and rescue duties while exposed to extreme cold and/or wet environmental elements. Ability to respond to an alarm, wake, and go from a sound sleep to full activity and exertion within a matter of minutes. Ability to hear and orally respond to verbal orders, calls for assistance, and radio communications, as well as the ability to hear, identify, and appropriately respond to various sounds in an environment of substantial background noises, such as sounds produced by structural collapses, back-drafts, breaking glass, fire, other firefighters, sirens, traffic, and victims. Ability to shout orders, warnings, and responses when necessary. Ability to understand and work under other adverse conditions which may include; hazardous chemicals and materials, electrical hazards, communicable diseases and biohazards, hazards associated with working in and near traffic, and natural and man-made disasters. PHYSICAL CONDITIONS Ability to carry a ladder weighing approximately 100 pounds, to raise and extend the ladder, to assist victims down ladders, and to carry fire hose and other heavy equipment up and down ladders and stairs. Ability to move and advance a charged hose line, weighing approximately 180 pounds into a burning building, while standing or crawling on the floor. Ability to hold a flowing hose line for long periods of time and to shut off a flowing line while maintaining control of the hose line. Ability to work in high, open places and confined spaces. Ability to operate a power saw in awkward positions, such as overhead cutting, cutting on a sloping roof, and cutting from a ladder, and cutting in zero visibility conditions. Ability to use a variety of tools to remove walls and ceilings, requiring pulling and pushing motions with arms extending overhead for long periods of time, or to force entry into a building. Ability to operate power extrication equipment to assist in patient removals from motor vehicles. The ability to lift and carry patients over rough or uneven terrain for considerable distances. Ability to bend, strain, stretch, contort, push, pull, twist, carry, walk with weight or lift to remove a victim from a motor vehicle and place the victim on a backboard or stretcher. Ability to complete firefighter and emergency rescue functions and tasks which are physically demanding over a period of time, without breaks, recovering quickly when given a short break. The Pemberville-Freedom Fire Department (PFFD) provides Fire and EMS to the Village of Pemberville, Freedom Township and Parts of Webster Township in Wood County Ohio, covering a total 43 sq. miles. Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics are to immediately respond to the fire station when there is an alarm. Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics are to man the apparatus needed for the alarm. The other Fire-fighter/EMT/Paramedics shall remain at the Fire Station until released by an officer or the scene is secured. Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics are to staff the radio and record all information on the Watch Desk Journal until all apparatus has returned to the station unless it is deemed unnecessary by an officer. Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics are to ensure all personal protective equipment is kept clean and in good working condition at all times. Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics are to follow the Standard Operating Guidelines for all fires and emergencies as contained in the Rossford Fire Department manuals. Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics are to help clean, inspect, and replace all equipment used on each emergency run before leaving the station, unless excused by an officer. Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics are to ensure that they are properly attired when arriving at the fire station in order to be able to perform any and all duties that may be assigned to them by the Fire Chief or Command Officers. No firefighter is to handle any victim on an EMS call unless he/she has a valid EMT certificate or is specifically authorized to do so by a certified officer. A firefighter who is not a certified EMT may drive or assist an E.M.T., other than direct patient care, if it is determined by the person in charge to be necessary because of a shortage of manpower. All Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic personnel shall maintain the following minimal certifications throughout their appointment to the department: State of Ohio EMT-Basic Certification, State Firefighter Volunteer Firefighter Certification, and AHA CPR “C” Card. All Firefighters/EMT/Paramedics will carry out any and all prescribed orders assigned to them by Command Officers or the Fire Chiefs. All Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics will maintain Fire and EMS recertification hours, and will be responsible for their own renewals. This includes Fire and EMS continuing education hours outlined by the State of Ohio every (3) years per Section 3303.08 of the ORC. When reporting for scheduled duty, Firefighter/EMT/Paramedics shall be punctual when reporting for duty and will notify the Fire Chief if they are going to be late. | Requirements: Pre-Employment Requirements: 1. An oral interview with Fire Chief and Command officers. 2. Physical Abilities Test. This is a Pass/Fail ONLY. Will take Firefighter Mile if within the last calendar year. A) If fail, no retake that day. May be rescheduled during next test dates. B) If pass, you will go on to the next step. 3. Physical by Physician at your cost. 4. Must sign for Background Check. 1. Must be available to commit to first available Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course. This course could be held Tuesdays and Thursdays or Mondays and Wednesdays depending on course location. The EMT class will last four (4) months and the class is 120 hours. 2. Upon completion of EMT course, you must attend the State of Ohio 36 hour Basic Firefighting class. This class will be held at Rossford Fire Station. NOTE: Both of the above courses are required to be a City of Rossford Fire Department employee. 3. You must attend weekly drills held every Monday in the evening from 1800-2100. Must be present for 3 of the 4 monthly drills. May only be excused from drill by Assistant Chief or Fire Chief. 4. During your first year, your EMS and Fire call attendance will be closely monitored and evaluated regularly. After Midnight response as well. 5. During your first year you will be assigned a Field Training Officer (FTO) who will be responsible for you and your progress as a City of Rossford Firefighter. Any problems that you may have during probationary year you will contact your FTO. 6. All new employees will sign a schooling reimbursement contract for both Fire and EMS training. Probationary One Year Evaluation: At the end of your first year, all your evaluations will be reviewed. Based on set criteria, you will then be made a regular employee or if all training hasn’t been met, your probationary period may be extended or employment terminated. Pride, excitement, challenge. Volunteering for fire and rescue service offers committed individuals the opportunity to experience one of the most diverse and challenging professions today. The emergency services provided by WTFD include providing prompt emergency medical care and transport, fire suppression, vehicle extrication (“jaws of life”), water & ice rescues and other types of specialty rescues, and responding to other 911 dispatched calls. It’s exciting, exhilarating and rewarding! The personal rewards and satisfaction each of us receives from volunteer service are often beyond description. The sense of accomplishment after controlling a building fire, the joy and elation when a child is born, the compassion for accident victims, the fulfillment of teaching fire safety and prevention—the list goes on. When volunteers aren’t running calls and providing emergency services, they participate in: Education: Volunteers educate the public on many issues, including fire prevention and safety, health education, injury prevention and CPR. Community Events: Members participate in various activities such as Point Place Days Parade, EMS stand by at Shoreland School football games, Halloween Trick or Treat patrol and bringing Santa around the community at Christmastime on our very own “Polar Express”. Applicants must reside within Washington Twp. OR within a 1 mile radius of the firehouse (2469 Shoreland Ave. Toledo, OH 43611) Washington Township Fire Department will accept applications at anytime. Applicants are encouraged to attend and observe regular department Wednesday evening training drills throughout the application process. A Background check consisting of criminal & driving history will be conducted. Applicants with existing Ohio Certifications in Firefighting or EMS will also have these verified at this time. Applicants who have been convicted of a felony or a violation of ORC 2903.3 (arson) are ineligible by the State of Ohio to hold a certification as a firefighter or EMT and will be automatically dismissed from the hiring process. A physician’s exam must be completed and the WTFD supplied documentation of such must be submitted prior to performing the Physical Endurance & Abilities Test (PHEAT). Applicants with medical or physical conditions/disabilities that in the examining physician’s assessment will prevent them from performing all the duties of a Firefighter/EMT as stated on the supplied form will be dismissed from the process. A Physical Endurance & Abilities Test (PHEAT) will be conducted for all applicants prior to the start of the Academy. Applicants will be given a copy of SOG 1-08 when their application is submitted so they may review and understand the basics of the PHEAT test. Applicants who fail this test may have an additional opportunity for ONE retest. Applicants who fail a second time will be automatically dismissed from the hiring process. Applicants who complete all required documentation, pass the background check, physician’s exam and PHEATS will be submitted to the Washington Township Board of Trustees for hiring approval at the Board’s next meeting. Recruits will be assigned to a Captain for Dept. specific training during their 12 month Probationary Period. Members must attend weekly training held on Wed. evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. (Alternate arrangements can be made for members who work afternoon/evening shift at their full-time employment.) Recruits must acquire Ohio Certification as both a Volunteer Firefighter and an EMT-Basic (or EMT for EMS Only members) before the end of their probationary period.
