In order to keep abreast of current developments, a firefighter must participate in continuing training and instructional programs. The firefighter must possess an aptitude for mechanical work and be in good physical condition. Able to work in hazardous or stressful conditions; ability to manage major emergency medical services incidents making appropriate decisions with regard to patient care; knowledge of the geographical layout of the County, including the street and road network; ability to work well with others; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep complex incidents reports; aptitude for mechanical work; ability to accept orders by radio. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Certification in accordance with OEMS EMT-B certification &/or EVOC certification within (18) months of acceptance. Must maintain all required certifications throughout volunteer membership. Must maintain good physical fitness. Must successfully pass background screening to include criminal history. EMS Volunteers may participate in training related to firefighting to see if they are interested, but first must complete the necessary steps including: Volunteer Office must receive written permission from the organization Chief and correlating Fire Company Chief, successful completion of medical exam by RCFRD contracted physician. The main duties of a firefighter are to help protect the public in emergency situations. Firefighters respond to a wide variety of calls, such as car crashes, chemical spills, flooding, water rescue and general rescue as well as fires. Volunteers typically serve during the hours of 6 p.m.--6 a.m. weekdays and 24 hours on weekends and holidays. Our volunteers have 18 months from acceptance to become certified as an emergency medical technician/Basic, EVOC rescue driver & or Firefighter 1. Volunteers meet ongoing training requirements in order to remain certified and skilled. Our typical volunteer is 18 years of age. Some organizations in Roanoke County VA do offer a junior program for 16 and 17 year olds with parental permission. Mt. Pleasant Fire Department do offer the Junior program for 16 and 17 year olds. All volunteers go through an application process that includes an FBI and State Police criminal history screening, Department of Motor Vehicle screening, and reference checks. Volunteers who are 21 years of age may become certified to drive emergency vehicles if they have a favorable driving record. We appreciate and honor our volunteers every chance we get. Roanoke County provides our volunteers with: - Personal protective gear - Workers compensation coverage - Free annual Vehicle License Fee Voucher valued at $20 - Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP) valued at up to $500 annually - Other fun and rewarding recognition events | Requirements: 1. Must be 16 years old on date you fill out application. 2. In order to drive must have a Virginia Driving License to have greater than Negative one (-1) demerit points. 3.
