Serve the community by responding to calls for assistance including, but not limited to structure & vehicle fires, motor vehicle accidents, alarm activations, various types of rescues, natural disasters and more. Qualified individuals will be trained to drive fire apparatus and given consideration to become a leader as a firematic officer in the department. Training is offered at no cost to every member. Also included is assisting fire prevention with presentations and community outreach events. Hard work is not all that being a volunteer involves. There are community orientated events where you can interact with the public whom you serve. Not to mention social activities where you will make lifelong friends with your new coworkers. While no career positions are currently available, many past members have used the knowledge they achieved to attain a career in the fire service. | Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and no more than 45 years old, preferably living in the 5th Fire District (Avenel, parts of Colonia, Iselin & Woodbridge) but consideration is given to all Woodbridge Township residents and those living in parts of Carteret and Rahway. The Elizabeth Avenue Volunteer Fire Company has protected the northern portion of Franklin Township, Somerset County since 1942. Our completely volunteer membership operates an engine, a ladder truck and a Haz-mat response unit from our Wiley Drive firehouse. Our primary response area consists mainly of high-tech industries, large area distribution facilities, multi-story offices and hotels, a quickly growing residential area, two miles and two interchanges of Interstate Route 287. Ladder 26 serves as the primary ladder truck company for Franklin Township Fire District One and the Borough of Millstone, and responds to all fires and smoke condition calls, district-wide. Haz-Mat 26 carries bulk absorbents and provides primary defensive Haz-mat operations for Fire District One as well. In 2014 we responded to 716 calls for assistance, including fires, automatic fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents and other service calls. The time our membership devoted to training resulted in hundreds of man-hours being donated by our membership to the citizens of Franklin Township. In 2015 we expect to exceed 800 calls for assistance including over 50 Mutual Aid calls outside of District #1. We are always looking for new members in all capacities. Volunteers are needed to help with fundraising, off-site adoption functions, and socializing cats. Volunteers must commit to a regular, 2-hour weekly shift and participate in two fundraising events per year.
