The Pomfret Volunteer Fire Department is an all-volunteer, full-service fire department providing world-class fire protection and emergency medical response services. These services are provided through a highly-trained, dedicated and adaptable force of volunteers. Our firefighters respond to about 350 calls for service throughout the year. These calls include motor vehicle accidents, emergency medical situations, structure fires, hazardous materials incidents, water rescues as well as other emergencies. We are always looking for new dedicated volunteers and we could use YOUR help. There are also many ways to volunteer at Pomfret Fire for those not looking to become a firefighter. Pomfret Fire Department is seeking people to join our team of responders to fire, rescue, and medical emergencies in the town of Pomfret, CT. Our department responds to about 320 calls per year in our rural town of 4,200 people which covers 40 square miles. Applications are available on the website www.pomfretfire.org, at the station at 67 Hampton Road next to the Little League Field, or by request at emergencymanagement@pomfretct.org. All training is provided at no charge. We will work with anyone's skills and interests to develop a training path in one or more basic areas of: interior firefighter; exterior firefighter; rescue technician; emergency medical responder (EMT or EMR); truck driver; pump operator; Fire Police/Traffic Direction. Junior members ages 14-18 are welcomed and can serve under certain limitations. We also accept "Associate" members, who don't respond to calls but can assist the department with affiliated operations such as in-house documentation, equipment maintenance, fund raising activities, and public education. Active members are eligible to receive benefits including a per-call stipend and town tax abatement up to $1000. | Requirements: Pomfret residence is preferred but not mandatory. New members must pass a physical examination with the department physician (no charge). Interior Firefighters must show proof of or attain Firefighter 1 Certification. Volunteers help keep rescued animals happy and healthy by cleaning stalls, replacing shavings and straw, cleaning food and water dishes, refilling waters, raking hay, and performing other necessary tasks. Assist in the preservation and maintenance of the historic Chamberlin Mill. Volunteers will help with tasks related to the upkeep of the mill and its surroundings, ensuring it remains a valuable educational resource.

Assist with the care of raptors by preparing diets, feeding and watering the birds, and monitoring their behavior. Volunteers also assist with treatments for injured raptors.

Participate in group projects such as building new aviaries, landscaping, cleanup, and painting. Projects are specific and require prior approval.

College students can apply for internships to gain experience in wildlife care, including preparing diets, feeding, monitoring raptor behavior, and assisting with educational programs.

Assist with fundraising, event planning and support, mailings, and grant writing. Flexible hours are available for volunteers with limited availability.

Engage in weekly aviary cleaning, maintenance tasks such as painting and repairs, and grounds upkeep including mowing and snow removal. Volunteers work on new constructions and general property maintenance.

Train with Ambassador Raptors and travel to schools, libraries, and events to educate the public. Participate in special events like fundraisers and require a long-term commitment due to training.

Foster homes are needed in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Fosters provide a loving home and help prepare dogs for their forever homes. FADR covers all expenses, including food, while the dog is in the foster home.

Volunteers are needed to drive foster dogs to and from vet appointments and events, pick up new dogs from transport, and assist at adoption and awareness events. Volunteers will also help promote FADR and raise awareness about Dachshunds as pets.

Assist in promoting the rescue’s fundraisers and activities. Responsible for website content, creating Facebook events, and applying for free ads.

Undertake various office support tasks, including data entry and scheduling meetings. Requires attention to detail and discretion.
