The Garrettsville Freedom Nelson Joint Fire District is a fire and rescue department that does not provide EMS services. We cover 52 square miles, which consists of a Village and two Townships. The district is very diverse, covering Nelson Ledges State Park, where we perform high angle rope rescue, eight miles of the Ohio Turnpike with two service plazas, an industrial area, two shopping plazas, two car dealerships, and a downtown area. We staff Monday - Friday from 07:00 - 16:00 and on weekends during special events. The rest of the time, we are call in department and are paid per hour for responses. We average approximately 300 calls a year, and provide mutual aid to many of the surrounding communities. Our fleet consists of one 70' aerial platform, one rescue engine, two 3,000-gallon tankers/tenders, one grass truck, one Gator, one special operations vehicle (ice and rope rescue equipment), as well as two staff vehicles. | Requirements: Certifications start at a 36-hour certification initially "Volunteer Firefighter", Firefighter 1 which is required to be able to work on station and Firefighter 2 certification which is the highest level card you van obtain. Specialty certifications of rope rescue, fire safety inspector, fire instructor, and more are available. National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700 and 800 are required, and offered. We train and obtain required continuing education at the station on the first three Wednesdays of the month, beginning at 19:00. For our Junior program, you must be 16 years of age to begin, with a parent of guardians consent. You will learn the equipment and what it is used for. Train on Wednesday evenings with the firefighters, which includes auto extrication, rope rescue, drafting, hydrant operations, and operating the apparatus (driving excluded). | Categories: Firefighter, Junior Members
