Probationary Firefighter - Paid on Call The Savoy Fire Department would like to thank you for your interest in our department. Serving your community as a firefighter is a great way to help others. The position of firefighter takes a special type of person that is willing to give of their time to train and educate themselves. They must prepare mentally and physically to respond to emergencies in our community. The Savoy Fire Department hires new applicants at least once per year and possibly more frequently than that based on the needs of the department and the amount of applications it has received. Applications can be submitted from anyone with no experience at any time but will be processed only at the time of a new probationary program being scheduled to begin. Applicants with prior experience in or on a Fire Department, EMS, Police, Military, Medical or other specialties that can serve the Savoy Fire Department will have their application reviewed on a case by case basis as soon as it is submitted. | Requirements: Must have the ability to: Communicate well with others. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work as a strong team player with a commitment to group success. Multi-tasks, thinks, and acts quickly in emergency situations if in a responder position. Listen to others and ask good questions. Be dependable, reliable, responsible, and possess integrity. Residency Requirement: 10 minute drive time from the station at 106 West Tomaras Avenue, Savoy for full members (Firefighters, EMS/Support, etc.) who respond on emergency calls. Finally any person who lives in residence that is contractually covered for fire services by the Savoy Fire Department but outside of those drive times may join the department as well. Additional Information: Pre-employment applicants must successfully complete and pass the following: Reference Check Background Check Panel Interview Physical Screening for members who are in a responder position (Firefighter, EMT, etc.) Medical Evaluation for members who are in a responder position (Firefighter, EMT, etc.) Two Orientation Sessions All new hires are subject to completion of a minimum nine-month probationary period. Additionally applicants must meet the following requirements: Applicants must be over the age of 19 at the time of appointment. Applicants must possess a valid Driver’s License. Applicants must have no felony convictions. The Savoy Fire Department is a licensed Emergency Medical Services organization and therefore are required by law to have members who can be licensed to provide medical services/have access to medical records. Applicants must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Additionally applicants who are applying for a responder type position (Firefighter, EMS/Support, etc.) must meet the following requirements: Applicants must be able to perform firefighting tasks, rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions while wearing personal protective ensemble and self-contained breathing apparatus. This includes climbing ladders working at considerable heights and working in extremely hot or cold environments for prolonged time periods to name a few.
