The Village of Kohler Fire Department is looking to add entry-level volunteer firefighters to their active membership. New recruits will begin with an on-boarding period where they will gain exposure to the field through classroom and on-the-job training. Upon completion of state-mandated basic training requirements, the recruits will become qualified entry-level structural firefighters. Typical Tasks and Responsibilities: • Participate in training, classes, and drills in firefighting, disaster response, and specialized rescue • Perform rescue and firefighting work to protect lives, property, and the environment • Operate fire equipment and tools appropriately • Assess fires and situations and report conditions to superiors to receive instructions, using two-way radios • Perform general maintenance work of fire equipment and facilities Skills: • Ability to effectively communicate • Integrity and composure • Ability to follow instructions • Ability to work with a team • Problem-solving skills • Patience, understanding, and sensitivity • Confidence and resilience • Adaptability and flexibility • Sound judgment, courage, decisiveness, quick reactions and the ability to stay calm in difficult circumstances • The willingness and ability to learn on a continual basis • An interest in promoting community safety, education and risk prevention | Requirements: Requirements: • Candidates must within the Village of Kohler, have a high school diploma, a valid driver's license, and be able to pass a basic physical SCBA user exam. • Active firefighters drill/practice at least 2 times per month, usually on the 1st and 3rd Mondays, and meet on the 4th Monday for general business/social meeting. • To reach entry-level status, active members are expected to participate in roughly 60 hours of state-mandated training in their first 1-2 years. Benefits: • Active firefighters are provided with a pager and a complete set of safety gear. • Initial and on-going training requirements are provided free-of-charge by Kohler Volunteer Fire Department, Lakeshore Technical College, and other regional departments. • Firefighters are paid $20 for every training exercise they participate in, and $30 for every emergency they respond to. About the Kohler Volunteer Fire Department: The Kohler Volunteer Fire Department, founded in 1914, consists of 23 active firefighters, and 17 social members. All firefighters are expected to make a reasonable effort to attend practices and respond to emergencies. It judgment that certain work circumstances, family activities and personal matters will sometimes conflict with Fire Department schedules, and not permit participation at all practices, alarms, and social functions. All Active and Social members pay $24 a year in dues to belong to the Kohler Fire Department. There are many activities that the entire membership can get involved with including the annual bowling tournament; 2 or 3 sporting activities against other fire departments; water fights; monthly social meetings at the station; an annual banquet and awards night that includes spouses/guests; and our annual fund-raiser Brat Fry each May. The Kohler Fire Department is a unique blend of dedicated professionals working to save lives and protect property, who also enjoy the comradery and fun of each other’s company.
