You are welcome (and encouraged) to come tour our station, meet the crew and get any questions answered. We recruit new volunteer Firefighters and EMT's twice a year, April 1st and October 1st are the application deadlines. Visit our website at southbayfire.com to view our application process. In order to apply we need to have a copy of your WA State Driver's Abstract, a passing Accuplacer test, and a passing CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test), our application is available on our website. Once we receive your completed application we will set up an interview. We offer stipend pay per shift. The rate varies depending on the number of certifications you earn. We also offer a graduation stipend upon completion of academy; this is to thank you for your dedication throughout the course and also to offset your initial application fees. We will sponsor your training to become a certified Firefighter and/or EMT. You must complete the 5 month academy which takes place 2 evenings a week and about 5 Saturdays during that period. At the end of academy and once you earn your certification, you will be able to start running calls. You will be assigned a platoon and can work with your Battalion Chief to schedule your shifts. We ask that you volunteer at least 1 shift every 9 days. Shifts are typically 12 hour periods, usually 6 pm to 6 am, and you sleep at the station. That said we will work to accommodate your schedule. We also have a resident responder program for volunteers who have earned their FF1 and EMT certification. The resident house is a free housing option for our volunteer FF/EMT's. The house is located in our District just a couple of miles from the station, it houses up to 6 responders. Some of the tasks involved in being a volunteer FF/EMT include: responding to Basic Life Support Calls, performing emergency medical services. Drive or ride a fire vehicle in response to fire alarms; places equipment; lays and connects hose; operates high capacity pumps and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses fire extinguishers; and uses self-contained breathing apparatus. Performs ventilation tasks above ground. Participates in training drills, attends schools and department classes on firefighting, hydraulics, first aid, fire equipment and apparatus and safety education classes. https://www.southbayfire.com/volunteer | Requirements: Volunteer Requirements Essential functions of the position of Volunteer firefighter include the ability to: Physically perform all activities and tasks related to firefighting activities. Drive an emergency vehicle and operate emergency medical and firefighting equipment in a safe manner. Physically navigate rapidly and without jeopardizing the safety of others or self, and conceivable surface, including but not limited to: slippery, uneven terrain, various building levels (roofs/stairs), high volume traffic areas and intersections. Climb ladders, perform duties at heights of 110 feet or more, and life, move and/or carry a minimum of 180 lbs. Operate a variety of mechanical, motorized and hydraulic equipment and small tools, requiring, but not limited to: finger dexterity, ability to grasp, reach, push/pull, extend/flex, and operate foot control. Endure performing duties in restrictive clothing and breathing apparatus, and in workspaces that are cramped, exposed to extreme temperatures, and contain a variety of toxins. Read, memorize and interpret geographical and technical information (in written and verbal form). Constantly communicate verbally to a wide variety of people in stressful, emergency and life-threatening situations, including operation of emergency two-way radio.
