As a volunteer firefighter/EMT, responsibilities include transporting patients to the hospital and performing Basic Life Support services. Duties also encompass fire suppression and prevention, operating both power and manual tools, and driving as well as operating various Fire/EMS apparatuses such as aid units, fire engines, support units, and water tenders. The role involves performing a wide range of rescue services, continuing training to maintain necessary certifications, and ensuring the upkeep of facilities and equipment. Fire Academy is currently offered once a year in the fall and EMT class is held twice a year, sponsorship for academies is offered to active members. Sign-up for these classes are approximately every January (Spring class) and July (Fall class). Classes are 3-4 months in length and usually consisted of 2 evenings and 1 weekend day. To maintain status as a recruit in academy students must maintain an 80% average while attending all classes and skills weekends. Missing classes or dropping below 80% will result in failing the academies. You are welcome (and encouraged) to come tour our station, meet the crew and get any questions answered. We recruit new volunteer Firefighters and EMT's twice a year, April 1st and October 1st are the application deadlines. Visit our website at southbayfire.com to view our application process. In order to apply we need to have a copy of your WA State Driver's Abstract, a passing Accuplacer test, and a passing CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test), our application is available on our website. Once we receive your completed application we will set up an interview. We offer stipend pay per shift. The rate varies depending on the number of certifications you earn. We also offer a graduation stipend upon completion of academy; this is to thank you for your dedication throughout the course and also to offset your initial application fees. We will sponsor your training to become a certified Firefighter and/or EMT. You must complete the 5 month academy which takes place 2 evenings a week and about 5 Saturdays during that period. At the end of academy and once you earn your certification, you will be able to start running calls. You will be assigned a platoon and can work with your Battalion Chief to schedule your shifts. We ask that you volunteer at least 1 shift every 9 days. Shifts are typically 12 hour periods, usually 6 pm to 6 am, and you sleep at the station. That said we will work to accommodate your schedule. We also have a resident responder program for volunteers who have earned their FF1 and EMT certification. The resident house is a free housing option for our volunteer FF/EMT's. The house is located in our District just a couple of miles from the station, it houses up to 6 responders. Some of the tasks involved in being a volunteer FF/EMT include: responding to Basic Life Support Calls, performing emergency medical services. Drive or ride a fire vehicle in response to fire alarms; places equipment; lays and connects hose; operates high capacity pumps and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses fire extinguishers; and uses self-contained breathing apparatus. Performs ventilation tasks above ground. Lewis County Fire District 5 continually seeks applicants for Volunteer Firefighter and/or EMT positions. Successful applicants will perform duties of a Volunteer Firefighter and/or EMT in responding to emergencies in our 65 square mile response area. Our Fire District is predominantly volunteer; the community depends very heavily on our well trained volunteer staff of emergency personnel. Being a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT carries with it many benefits which are fully funded by the Fire District without any cost to you as a volunteer.
