Volunteers assist with various tasks at Palmetto Island State Park, including helping at the entrance station, maintenance, grounds-keeping, and interpretive programs. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, and youth can also participate in certain activities.

Assist in organizing and facilitating hunting and outdoor events for disabled veterans. Volunteers will help set up equipment, guide veterans during activities, and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Like many other local municipalities and most of the United States, full-time and part-time firefighter staffing is very limited due to cost. Still in North America even today, over 60% of the majority of Fire Department staffing is comprised of Volunteers. The number of volunteer firefighters is decreasing, as call volumes and the need for fire services increase. Becoming a Scott Volunteer Firefighter isn’t just running into burning buildings. Scott Firefighters have multiple responsibilities beyond responding to structure, vehicle, and all other types of fires. The SFD also responds to medical emergencies, water rescues, hazardous materials incidents, vehicle crashes with injuries, and all incidents requiring the response of the Fire Department. Scott Volunteer Firefighters also participate heavily in special events and fire prevention education details in the community, such as Festivals, Football games, and other public events. In 2024 the SFD responded to over 1000 calls for service, and that number is ever-rising, each year with the growth of our community. No previous experience? No problem. We provide all the training you need to become a firefighter. You will work hands-on, side by side with trained and certified Firefighters, receiving training and learning the basics to assist and complete the required job tasks. The task you learn will not only help the community but could also aid in helping or saving the life of a loved one, in your non-fire department life. The Duson Fire Department is currently excepting qualified applications for Volunteer Firefighters. These volunteer firefighters are responsible for responding to different incidents such as, structure/ commercial fires, and alarms. Grass, trash, field fires. Vehicle accidents, rescue calls, hazardous scenes, and public service calls. Volunteers are essential to the success of the Celtic Bayou Festival, helping with various tasks to ensure smooth operations. Volunteers receive free admission on the day of their position and become part of a cultural tradition in the community.

Help keep the tools in good working order and communicate with borrowers about the tools they might need. General support tasks are also part of the role.

Volunteers are needed to help with cleaning kennels, walking dogs, and brushing horses. This is a fun and rewarding opportunity to support the well-being of animals in the shelter.
