Volunteers are needed to visit local facilities such as nursing homes, rehab centers, and schools with their therapy dogs. This role involves making approximately 30 visits a month and working closely with children and seniors to provide emotional support and companionship.

The mission of the City of Due West Fire & Rescue Department is to reduce frequency and severity of emergencies, by aggressively responding to all fires, high priority medical emergencies, and emergency incidents requiring DWFR response within the city limits and provide mutual aid to Abbeville County and other surrounding jurisdictions. The occupational safety and well-being of the personnel at the Due West Fire & Rescue Department is of utmost importance. In order to fulfill our mission these essential components must be in place: public fire safety education, fire code enforcement, progressive training, and work place safety. Foundation Principle: The occupational safety and health of the Due West Municipal Firefighters is of the utmost importance. • Firefighters will respond to, participate in, and return from all alarms in a safe manner. • DWFR will comply with applicable OSHA standards and regulations. • Firefighter safety and health will be the final basis for decision making. Cornerstone Programs: • The frequency and severity of preventable emergencies including fires, hazardous materials, rescue and similar emergencies will be positively impacted by fire prevention and pre-planning inspection programs. • The Fire Chief, Fire Marshall and Companies will enforce the applicable laws and ordinances as adopted by the Town of Due West and the State of South Carolina related to fire prevention in existing buildings and new construction. • Preplanning will be conducted in accordance with NFPA guidelines. • Information collected will be cataloged and made accessible to all firefighters of DWFR during normal and emergency operations. Firefighter, EMR/Paramedic, Techinical Rescue, Haz-Mat Response | Requirements: Essential Duties: -Works with mutual aid agencies and personnel of Due West Fire & Rescue -Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishing task. -Works under the supervision of the Officer Staff of Due West Fire & Rescue. Performs emergency aid activities for the ill and injured, including basic life support, and providing other assistance as required. -Must maintain a minimum of Emergency Responder and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. -Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, and emergency medical, hazardous materials and related subjects. -Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates personal computer, radio and other communication equipment. -Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in prevention programs. -Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment, apparatus and facilities. -Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment. -Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities. -Presents programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics. -Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris. -Required to perform 24 hours of work duty per month in order to remain on the active roster. Non-Essential Duties: -May assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of new recruits or other department personnel, as assigned. -Assist in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned. -Assist in training new employees as assigned. -The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. (A junior firefighter application is available for 16-18y/o’s) -Must possess a valid driver’s license. -Must be able to read and write the English language. -Working knowledge of driver safety. -Ability to obtain Emergency Medical Responder or higher with-in the first six months. -Ability to learn the operations of the fire suppression and other emergency equipment. -Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke. -Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations. -Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. -Must meet NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1 standard. -Must meet CFR 1910.120 Hazardous Materials Operation level. -Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public. -Ability to meet the special requirements listed below.
