Lee Township Fire Department (LTFD) is a paid-on-call fire department serving the citizens of Lee and Greendale Townships in Midland County, Michigan. From one station in Lee Township equipped with two class A engines, one tanker/tender, one medium duty rescue/service truck, one brush engine and one medical rescue, we respond to our neighbors in their time of need, whether fire suppression, medical emergency, traumatic events (such as traffic crashes), assisting neighboring fire departments, state or county agencies (such as lost person searches or traffic assistance), and many other interesting and challenging circumstances. Our call volume has been increasing steadily -- last year we responded to over 550 individually unique responses. We not only provide fire suppression services, but also are a medical first response (non-transporting) Emergency Medical Service (EMS) licensed by the State of Michigan and governed by the Midland-Gladwin Medical Control Authority. The majority of our calls are medical, but there are plenty of other calls as well. We have one chief, one deputy chief, three division chiefs and one assistant chief who serve as command staff and officers for our 13 other firefighters who come from all walks of life, from fresh out of high school to retired; from working moms to self employed, other public safety disciplines, corporate employees ... we have many different backgrounds, and, if you meed the requirements below, we have a place for YOU! We provide training and equipment, out of our department's operating budget, to provide you with the necessary skills, licenses and training to serve your fellow citizen in their time of need. | Requirements: COMMITMENT: 1) You will be required to take MFR and Firefighter I & II classes. These are at our expense, taught at Midland EMS and Homer Township Fire Station (right "next door!"), and require two nights a week with an occasional Saturday class thrown in from late August through late April or early May (with time off for firearm deer season, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays). 2) We have departmental meetings the fourth Monday of each month (occasionally moved -- with notice -- to the following Monday if a holiday conflicts) at 7 pm. You are expected to be present! 3) We expect you to respond to incidents when you are available -- not just the "big" or "exciting" ones. Every time you respond you will learn something that will make you even more valuable on the "big one." REQUIREMENTS: 1) Must be able to pass a background check. The State of Michigan has requirements for obtaining the requisite license as a MFR. Michigan form EMS-252 (7/12), found at this url, will need to be submitted in order to apply for licensure if you have had ANY criminal convictions. (Quote from FAQ at this url If I have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor, will this stop me from obtaining a Michigan EMS license? This type of information will be reviewed on an individual basis. You must submit your application, fee, and information regarding the occurrence including dates, sentences, and completion of requirements. We will review and make a decision at that time. Please keep in mind that we do take into consideration the type of conviction, the age that you were when the incident occurred, the time that has elapsed since the conviction, and your record since the incident.) THIS WILL BE CHECKED -- do not think that neither we, the educational facility (Midland EMS) and/or the State of Michigan do not search out this information! 2) Pass a driving record check. Not all offenses exclude you from becoming a firefighter -- some may simply preclude you from operating our apparatus. However, some do preclude you from joining our organization. Please feel free to ask the chief as below if you have any questions or concerns in this area 3) ALL Lee Township employees are sent for a reading exam -- not just firefighter candidates. The exam for MFR has no provision for a reader, extra time or any other such accommodation. This is a state requirement. We have found that employees who can read at or above an 8th grade reading level have no difficulties in completing the educational component and pass the requisite written test for MFR licensure. 4) Ability to see (with correction); hear (with correction); move over uneven terrain unassisted; carry/use firefighting equipment; assist in extricating, providing emergency medical care and carrying victims/patients in medical emergencies; follow orders; maintain awareness; be alert to safety issues; maintain your temper; operate trucks and pumps (as assigned and after proper additional training), etc. This is not an all inclusive list, but an example of what is required to be a successful firefighter/MFR. 5) LTFD personnel are employed by the Lee Township Board of Trustees and will be sent for a physical at our expense. Drug testing may be included and may be required thereafter. We are an equal opportunity employer. 6) Fill out an application. You may obtain an application at the station (fourth Monday as above -- or when we come back from a run) or email or call the chief as below and we will either mail you an application or make arrangements to meet you at the station at a mutually convenient time. There is a release of information for your background and driving record check included. | Categories: Firefighter
