The Elizabeth Avenue Volunteer Fire Company of Fire District #1 Franklin Township, Somerset, NJ is always looking for new members to Volunteer. The Elizabeth Avenue Volunteer Fire Company has protected the northern portion of Franklin Township, Somerset County since 1942. Our completely volunteer membership operates an engine, a ladder truck and a Haz-mat response unit from our Wiley Drive firehouse. Our primary response area consists mainly of high-tech industries, large area distribution facilities, multi-story offices and hotels, a quickly growing residential area, two miles and two interchanges of Interstate Route 287. Ladder 26 serves as the primary ladder truck company for Franklin Township Fire District One and the Borough of Millstone, and responds to all fires and smoke condition calls, district-wide. Haz-Mat 26 carries bulk absorbents and provides primary defensive Haz-mat operations for Fire District One as well. In 2014 we responded to 716 calls for assistance, including fires, automatic fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents and other service calls. The time our membership devoted to training resulted in hundreds of man-hours being donated by our membership to the citizens of Franklin Township. In 2015 we expect to exceed 800 calls for assistance including over 50 Mutual Aid calls outside of District #1. We are always looking for new members in all capacities. Volunteers help maintain trails by removing fallen trees, cleaning drainage pipes, and ensuring trails are safe and accessible. Tasks may include applying gravel and pruning vegetation.

Join a crew for manual and chemical control of invasive plant species. This opportunity is available on weekdays only from March to October.

Greet visitors and introduce them to the refuge and the boardwalk area. This opportunity is outdoors and available on weekdays and weekends year-round.

The 40+ hour Confidential Sexual Violence Advocate training prepares you to provide in-person support to survivors of sexual violence at police stations, hospitals, and courts in Middlesex County. Learn about trauma, crisis intervention, advocacy skills, community resources, and more. No experience is needed, and anyone 18 years or older is invited to apply.

We promote our programs and events through flyers that need to be posted in the Center and at various locations around town. Experience with programs such as Canva, Google Docs, PowerPoint, etc. is needed to help design promotional flyers at various times of the month.

This includes answering phones, taking messages, light office work (such as filing, faxing, making copies, etc.), setting up refreshments, and other customer service duties. This includes heavy contact with Center members. Good communication and organizational skills are required. Shifts are available Mondays through Fridays from 9AM-Noon.

Help keep our lending library organized by shelving and re-shelving books in proper areas. This entails approximately one hour per week, anytime the Center is open.

From time to time assistance is needed with one of our many social events. Duties can include decorating, setting up for events, and serving food. Can also include on-site assistance at our paper shred fundraisers. All that is needed is a positive attitude and a willingness to give back to the community. Approximately 2-3 hours on a monthly basis.

Do you have an artistic talent or hobby that you can teach to others? Contact us to schedule a 45-minute to 1-hour craft session here at the Center. We will supply all the needed materials.

We’re always interested in meeting enthusiastic people with expertise, passion, or a special skill they would like to share with our members. Perhaps you can volunteer to: hold a TED Talk, speak to an audience about your work, passion, or hobbies; share photos from a unique travel experience – or whatever you may have to offer. We’re open to ideas!

Help us with database manipulation and spreadsheet maintenance. Requires ensuring all data is entered accurately; reviewing all information entered and making corrections where necessary. Experience with Excel and database skills required. This can be done at flexible times and may require 2-5 hours per month.

Volunteers support the Recreation Department by organizing and participating in social activities, outings, and special events for residents. They also help with the distribution of donations and materials to enhance resident experiences.
