Hyalite Rural Fire District
Hyalite Fire is seeking motivated individuals interested in becoming Volunteer Firefighters for our Fall 2025 Recruit Academy. The academy training will run from early September to early December and be held on Wednesday evenings, every Saturday, and every other Sunday. The academy includes topics such as fire attack, victim rescue, firefighter rescue, roof operations, hydrant operations, wildland fire operations and vehicle extrication. Completion of the academy will also earn you your IFSAC/Pro Board Firefighter 1 (FF1) and NWCG Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) certifications. Once the academy has been completed Hyalite Fire offers many opportunities for further training, experience, and certifications. Further programs include our resident volunteer program, where volunteers can live at the fire station in exchange for shifts worked. Volunteers also have the opportunity to pursue further IFSAC/Pro Board and NWCG certifications. Other opportunities include EMT training reimbursement and other reimbursements for volunteering. Hyalite Fire is a Rural Fire District just south of Bozeman, Montana serving an area of approximately 45 square miles and a population of approximately 10,000. Hyalite responds to around 800 calls for service per year and operates from 3 stations. Our apparatus include structure engines, ambulances, wildland engines, water tenders and support vehicles. Fort Ellis Fire Svc Area

A Defensive Focused Firefighter responds to both emergent and non-emergent calls for assistance made by the public. These may include fire, rescue, HazMat, natural disaster, and other incidents. EMS responses are also available as support for Medical Specialists. The Defensive Focused Firefighter performs various fireground and other incident tasks that require limited to moderate physical exertion. As such, no interior firefighting operations or those that require use of SCBA (air packs), nor intense physical activities associated to certain wild land or rescue tasks will be in the scope of this position. Further task modifications may be implemented on an individual basis where needs and/or preferences dictate. Task modification will be communicated to department officers to ensure personnel are only assigned appropriate tasks. Work direction is provided by department officers, incident commanders, more qualified staff (i.e. crew leaders), and state and local directives. | Requirements: The Defensive Focused Firefighter is required to complete specific trainings and demonstrate proficiencies in certain tasks within the first year of service. This training will be completed prior to the member responding to calls for service and being issued a pager. Previous fire service experience will be considered with training requirements. Attendance at regular monthly department training is also required once the member is added to the department roster. Officer approval and a successful background investigation is required before an individual may respond to calls for service. An average of 10-15 hours per month should be planned during the initial training phase, and 10-20 hours per month subsequent to pager issue, to successfully fulfill this position. 1. Be at least 18 years of age. 2. Reside within the Amsterdam Rural Fire District or within a geographic area so as to allow you to respond to station within 10 minutes, obeying all traffic laws. 3. A Support Focused Firefighter may perform a wide variety of essential, but non-emergent tasks that allow the department to function and operate smoothly. These tasks may also enhance the fire prevention, education, and overall mission of the department. These tasks may include: vehicle inspection and maintenance equipment inventory, testing, cleaning, and inspection data entry and record review fire prevention education for children and/or adults smoke detector installation and inspection fire alarm/suppression system reviews and documentation development plans reviews The above list is not comprehensive. Where an individual's desire and ability intersect a need of the department, efforts will be made by department leadership to utilize the individual in that role. Depending upon the task involved, a Support Focused Firefighter may take work direction from department officers or administrative staff. | Requirements: Requirements will vary depending upon the tasks assigned. An amount of initial training will be necessary for most tasks to ensure they are carried out safely and correctly. This training will be provided by the responsible officer or department staff member providing work instruction for the task. Attendance at regular department training is encouraged for at least the beginning portion of the training to be made aware of department announcements and activities, as well as to interface with the department as a whole. The training topic or activity occurring will determine whether the Support Focused Firefighter attends the duration of the training. A successful background investigation may be required to participate in certain tasks. An average of 5-10 hours per month should be planned to successfully fulfill this position. 1. A Medical Focused Firefighter responds to both emergent and non-emergent calls for assistance made by the public. These may include sickness and injury, as well as medical support of Firefighting, HazMat, and Rescue operations. ARFD is a first responder agency that does not transport patients, but provides basic life support until care is transferred to a transport agency. Work direction is provided by department officers, incident commanders, more qualified medical staff (i.e. paramedics and doctors), and state and local directives. | Requirements: The Medical Focused Firefighter must be (or become within the first year of service) a licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the State of Montana. Regular medical training attendance is required and will fulfill both Montana and NREMT Continuing Education (CE) and refresher training requirements. Additionally, certain additional departmental training, skill proficiency demonstration, and officer approval is required prior to the member responding to calls and being issued a pager. A successful background investigation is required before an individual may respond to calls for service. This role often involves lifting of equipment and patients and can require extended kneeling or other positions of discomfort. Those filling this role should have and maintain a level of physical fitness necessary to perform these tasks. Attendance at regular department training is encouraged for at least the beginning portion of the training to be made aware of department announcements and activities, as well as to interface with the department as a whole. The training topic or activity occurring will determine whether the Medical Focused Firefighter attends the duration of the training. Many Medical tasks overlap or support department operations and so a fair number of these trainings will be pertinent. An average of 10+ hours per month should be planned to successfully fulfill this position. 1. Be at least 18 years of age. 2. Reside within the Amsterdam Rural Fire District or within a geographic area so as to allow you to respond to station within 10 minutes, obeying all traffic laws. 3. An Offensive Focused Firefighter responds to both emergent and non-emergent calls for assistance made by the public. These may include Fire, Rescue, HazMat, Natural Disaster and other incidents. EMS responses are also available as support for medical incidents. In addition to all the tasks for the Defensive Focused Firefighter, the Offensive Focused Firefighter will perform tasks that may require moderate to heavy physical exertion. These tasks may include the extended wear of a 30 lb. SCBA pack, operation of heavy tools such as chainsaws and hydraulic cutting or spreading tools, and extended walking, lifting, tool use, or other activities. Ladder use is common and climbing ground ladders up to 30 feet and ladder apparatus up to 100 feet is a possibility. Some work also involves confined spaces and/or limited to no visibility. Work direction is provided by department officers, incident commanders, more qualified staff (i.e. crew leaders), and state and local directives. | Requirements: Offensive Focused Firefighters will be tasked to approach and enter burning structures and vehicles to perform rescue and fire suppression activities. Additional hazardous activities include HazMat operations, entrapment rescue, and wild fire attack. These activities occur at low frequency, but require the member to retain a high level of proficiency by means of regular drills and training. Those fulfilling this role should have and maintain a level of physical fitness necessary to perform these tasks. The Offensive Focused Firefighter is required to first complete the trainings necessary to fulfill the Defensive Focused Firefighter role. Previous fire service experience will be considered with training requirements. Officer approval and a successful background investigation is required before an individual may respond to calls for service and be issued a pager. As the member operates in the Defensive Focused Firefighter role, certain additional training will be provided, and the member will be required to demonstrate proficiencies in certain offensive firefighting tactics. When these trainings have been completed and proficiencies demonstrated, the department officers will review the individual's performance and approve the individual for the Offensive role. An average of 10-15 hours per month should be planned during the initial training phase and 10-20 hours per month subsequent to pager issue to successfully fulfill this position. 1. Be at least 18 years of age. 2. Reside within the Amsterdam Rural Fire District or within a geographic area so as to allow you to respond to station within 10 minutes, obeying all traffic laws. 3. Must have a valid Montana drivers license of the class required by state law. 4. Satisfactorily complete the recruit training program and CPR course. 5.
