Yantic Fire Dept
Welcome to the home of the Yantic Fire Engine Company. Located in the western-most section in the Town of Norwich, the Yantic Fire Engine Co. was established in 1847 to protect the now vacant Yantic Woolen Mill and surrounding Yantic village. With time our service area grew to include the areas and villages of Bean Hill, Plain Hill, and the original settlement of the town - Norwichtown. In modern times we provide mutual aid and F.A.S.T. coverage to the other Norwich departments as well as departments in the towns of Franklin, Bozrah, Baltic, and beyond. Besides fire, our services include first-response care to medical calls for service; as well as technical rescue for motor vehicle accidents, confined space & high angle situations, and a coordinated response with other Norwich departments for water search & rescue. We operate at the Hazardous Materials - Operational level, utilizing mutual aid for any higher level Hazardous Materials incidents. Within our service area we have the river from which our village is named, 2 major limited access highways, an active railway, numerous commercial, industrial, and communications properties, 2 hotels, a Major League Baseball (Class A) stadium, and one of the largest hospitals in Eastern Connecticut which houses an aeromedical unit. We cover these locales with 3 engines, a heavy rescue unit, a medium-duty service unit, a boat, and the dedicated service of over 50 men and women; all of whom serve the community as volunteers. Our firehouse is one of the oldest in the state, as well as in the country. Since our inception in 1847 we have remained in the same location, and after a fire in 1907 the firehouse was rebuilt to what it is now - with some changes over the years of course! We own not only the firehouse itself, but a 2.5 acre field which overlooks the river in which we host numerous private, semi-private, and public events in; most notably the annual Norwich Rotary Duck Races. We also open up the firehouse for our in-house steak dinners and annual Steak & Lobster dinner; both are events which the public can purchase tickets for with the proceeds going to the fire company. Thank you so much for stopping by! And above all, stay safe. | Requirements: Our requirements are fairly simple and straight forward: 1) Are you over 18? (or over 16 and have your parent/guardian's permission.) 2) Do you have reliable transportation in order to get to the firehouse for calls for service? 3) Do you live in the Yantic, Norwichtown, or Bean Hill area of Norwich, CT (the western half of Norwich); or within 1 mile of the firehouse in Bozrah or Franklin? Those are the basics! There are some other questions that we will ask at a later time, but we'll get to those. So, what does it take to be a Yantic Fire Engine Co. Member? 1) We run between 500-700 emergencies a year. We ask our members to committ to at least 20% of those, or about 120/yr. 2) We have a regular company meeting every month, on the 1st monday of the month. We ask for as close to 100% attendance as you can, however a minimum of 25% is required by the Bylaws. 3) We train on the 2nd and 3rd mondays of each month, or 24 days/year (minimum). We ask for as close to 100% attendance as you can (we need you to know what you're doing on an emergency scene), however a minimum of 20% is required by by-laws. 4) We ask for all members to obtain at least Connecticut Fire Fighter I or EMR/EMT by the end of their second year. All certification courses, including any additional training you choose to persue, are 100% paid for by the fire company. Of course prior certification is always welcome, as long as it meets Connecticut standards. - Not all members need to obtain emergency medical certification, however all members will need CPR certification. 5) We have numerous other events we do every year, and most of them need members to help out. We simply ask for assistance with those other things (i.e. our famous steak & lobster dinner). | Categories: Junior Members, EMT, Firefighter, Department Support
