The Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (Volunteer FF/EMT) serves the community by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. They perform within the scope of the policies and procedures of the Oakdale Hose Company and they perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue, hazardous material responses, training, building inspections and public education. The Volunteer FF/EMT normally works under the supervision of a company officer and is expected to function effectively as part of a highly trained team. They are also expected to perform their duties under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases. The Volunteer FF/EMT is required to attend regularly scheduled training in order to maintain the high level of knowledge, skill and ability necessary to function safely and effectively as a firefighter and EMS provider in accordance with state law, county protocols, and standard operating procedures. The work performance of a Volunteer firefighter/EMT is continuously evaluated for general knowledge, skill proficiency, and ability to work as part of a team. TVFD picks up the cost of required fire fighting class, and often approves Firefighter 1/Firefighter 2 certification programs. Did you know that we accept junior members? No? Well, let me fill you in. Anyone that is at least fourteen years of age and, of course with permission from your parents, can join Hillndale Volunteer Fire Department as a junior member. Keep in mind that your education comes first, so we will periodically contact your parents and see how you are doing in school. Keeping good grades is a requirement to be a junior member. Between the ages of fourteen and eighteen, we will work to educate you and prepare you to become a full member of the volunteer fire service. Yes, you are allowed to go on emergency calls, but restrictions do apply. Once you reach seventeen years of age and are close to the end of your senior year of high school, you can participate in both a volunteer firefighter and EMT training course.
