Osage County Fire District #6
Burlingame Fire District #6 provides fire and first responder medical service to an area covering approximately 110 square miles. This area includes the City of Burlingame as well as Dragoon and Burlingame townships. We respond to structure fires, vehicle fires, wildland fires, hazardous condition standbys, automobile accidents, emergency medical calls, and light rescue incidents. Burlingame Fire District #6 responds with two class A pumpers, one 1250 gallon and one 2000 gallon tender, two brush trucks, one first responder pickup, and one light rescue truck. Basic equipment on the trucks includes normal firefighting hand tools, hose lines, ladders, and basic medical supplies. Advanced equipment includes foam dispensing for flammable liquid fires, large volume water nozzles, chain and rotary saws, portable water tanks for rural operations, extrication tools, self-contained breathing apparatus, and basic rope rescue gear. Our first responder pickup also carries advanced life support equipment including a manual heart monitor/defibrillator and mechanical CPR device. On average our department responds to 300-350 incidents annually with approximately 60% of these being medical emergencies which is why we train our members to a minimum of CPR and First Aid but highly encourage them to become Emergency Medical Technicians. Wildland and structure fires account for another large percentage of these calls. The majority of all incidents occur between the hours of 12pm-9pm. | Requirements: TRAINING REQUIRMENTS - Burlingame Fire District #6 provides regular training on the first Wednesday and third Thursday of every month as well as additional training sessions throughout the year. Each member is required annually to recertify on CPR/First Aid, Hazardous Materials Awareness, SCBA fit test, and Infectious Control (all of which are put on by the department) as well as attend at least 10 training sessions throughout the year. We encourage each member to be trained in firefighting as well as emergency patient care, however, we understand some do not feel comfortable doing both and we will work with each individual. If one decides to do so they will be put through a Firefighter I and Firefighter II program. Also at each training members perform a basic mechanical check-in of all apparatus and equipment including small engines and medical equipment to ensure everything is in working order. SAFETY & PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT - Due to the hazardous conditions we face each one of our members is issued a full set of structural and wildland firefighting gear as well as a pager and the ability to receive incident notifications by text message. Burlingame Fire District #6 places an emphasis on safety of our members that is not limited to firefighting operations. Due to potential exposure on medical emergencies all members will be asked to receive a hepatitis B and tetanus vaccine if they do not have them. This is not mandatory however they will need to sign a waiver if they decline the hepatitis B vaccine. Each member will also be required to fill out a medical history screening to determine if they are physically able to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus. Although we provide this equipment to keep members safe we urge them to take proper care of it and promptly return it if they no longer wish to be a member of the department. Here is a breakdown of what it costs to properly outfit one of our members. BENEFITS - Firemen’s Relief Fund is money that is collected by the State Insurance Commissioner’s Office. A small amount of all fire insurance premiums that are paid in the state are put into this fund which is then divided amongst the participating fire departments in the state. We use these fund to purchase 24/7 death benefits for all our members placing the remainder of the fund in an annuity that is used for retirement benefits that our members qualify for once they have spent 20 years, in good standing, with the department. Also as soon as a member joins the department they are immediately covered under the department’s worker’s compensation insurance for injuries that occur during fire department activities. On top of both these benefits the federal and state governments also provide sizeable death benefits if a member is killed in the line of duty. Although we pride ourselves in being a Volunteer department our members do get reimbursed $15 for each regularly scheduled training and each incident they respond to. Pay per incident is $15, and any incident that has a duration over three hours will pay an additional $15. Examples : 30min incident = $15, 3hr incident = $30, 12hr incident = $30. There are also many projects that arise from time to time including building our own apparatus, designing training sessions, public education events, as well as departmental celebrations.
