Volunteer firefighters typically work 24-hour shifts, but are eligible to work in shorter blocks as approved by the Volunteer Coordinator. They perform within the scope of the policies and procedures of the NCFPD and they perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue, hazardous material responses, training, and public education. The Volunteer Firefighter normally works under the supervision of a Company Officer and is expected to function effectively as part of a highly trained team. They are also expected to perform their duties under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases. REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS 1.1. Must have and maintain a valid Class "C" California Driver's License. Must be insurable and maintain this status with the District's all-risk insurance carrier 1.2. State certification and San Diego County accredited as an EMT-I* *Exception: Applicants who reside within the NCFPD boundaries (Fallbrook, Bonsall, and Rainbow) may apply and serve as a Volunteer without having an EMT Certification, but must proactively work toward successfully completing an EMT Program within the first year of Volunteering. Experience as an EMT, Firefighter or Volunteer Firefighter is desirable Applicants must have the ability to pass psychiatric, medical and physical agility examinations; perform strenuous work under adverse conditions for sustained periods of time; react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; learn and retain information on procedures, protocols and practices related to medical, fire and other emergency responses. Qualified applicants are required to successfully complete the District’s physical agility test. The successful candidate will be required to remain a non-smoker/tobacco user throughout his/her appointment with the NCFPD, and must remain insurable by the District’s liability insurance carrier to operate motor vehicles.
