As a volunteer firefighter/EMT, responsibilities include transporting patients to the hospital and performing Basic Life Support services. Duties also encompass fire suppression and prevention, operating both power and manual tools, and driving as well as operating various Fire/EMS apparatuses such as aid units, fire engines, support units, and water tenders. All training and equipment are provided. Volunteers are not required to obtain these certifications prior to applying. Fire Academy is currently offered once a year in the fall and EMT class is held twice a year, sponsorship for academies is offered to active members. Sign-up for these classes are approximately every January (Spring class) and July (Fall class). Classes are 3-4 months in length and usually consisted of 2 evenings and 1 weekend day. To maintain status as a recruit in academy students must maintain an 80% average while attending all classes and skills weekends. Missing classes or dropping below 80% will result in failing the academies. Our policy requires that you have a good driving record, pass a criminal background check and complete a physical ability test. If you feel you meet the standards, please complete the application and return them to us. The driving record and criminal background check will be conducted after acceptance to West Thurston Regional Fire Authority. Upon completion and passing of the written test and physical agility as well as completion of the oral interview and have been accepted as volunteer, you will be asked to get a NFPA physical exam (we will give you the proper forms upon successful completion of testing.)
