Thank you for expressing interest in becoming a member of the Berwyn Fire Company. We hope this information packet is able to answer some of the questions you may have about our company. Volunteers are the backbone of the Berwyn Fire Company, and it is important that you realize what is involved in being a fire department member before making the necessary commitment. This manual is intended to describe how the Berwyn Fire Company operates and gives you some background information before you make any decisions on submitting an application. You are encouraged to discuss this information with your family and to contact the membership committee if you require additional information. Volunteers – All Berwyn Fire Company members are volunteer with the exception of nine career staff members. They are all individuals with strong community will, and commitment to active involvement in making our community what it is today. The ages of our members range from 16 years old to those who are retired and have obtained life member status. Education levels vary from those yet to complete high school to those who have completed advanced degrees. Our members work within the community as chemists, business owners, police officers, registered nurses, career firefighters, mechanics, contractors, 911 dispatchers, school teachers, architects, medical sales and serve in our nations military. The fire company was formed in 1894; at that time only firefighting services were provided to the community. Emergency medical services were added in 1951. Today the Berwyn Fire Company responds to over 3,000 fire and EMS calls for help each year, making us one of the busiest fire companies in Chester County. More history on the fire company can be found on our website, www.berwynfireco.org. Obviously whenever an emergency arises, but just as important are our training sessions which are scheduled throughout the year. Fire company drills are held every Monday night and company business meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month. Training courses from local training academies are also scheduled throughout the year and all members are strongly encouraged to take part in these formal training courses. What you can expect from the Berwyn Fire Company….. •Training: The Berwyn Fire Company provides all the training which is needed to do the job. •Equipment: The Berwyn Fire Company will provide all necessary equipment to do the job. •Protective clothing: All protective clothing will be issued as necessary. •Worker’s compensation: All Berwyn Fire Company personnel are covered by worker’s compensation. •Communications: Company personnel will be provided with fire department pagers. The department is administered by a board of directors through thoughtful and deliberate programs, and comprehensive training. The company is guided by means of bylaws, standard operating procedures and relationships with both Tredyffrin and Easttown townships. •Completion of formal Fire/EMS/Fire Police training: Formal courses are an important part of the training process. It is expected that a member make all attempts at taking formal training offered at the various local academies. This training goes a long way in making the team effective and safer on emergency responses. •Availability for emergency responses: Obviously call availability is important. We ask that if you are available to respond, please do so. The more members we have to attend an incident the better. •Company meetings and drill attendance: These are where you will learn to most about the company and its operations. It is extremely important that company meetings and drills are regularly attended. •Completion of yearly training requirements: Yearly training requirements are required of all members who respond on emergency incidents. These requirements are set fourth in the fire company’s standard operating procedures. •Fundraising: It is expected that you participate in fundraising activities throughout the year to help support the fire company financially. It's important that you understand the commitment required, prior to joining the fire company. You may hear the term, "the only thing voluntary is joining; the rest is mandatory". For firefighters, this isn't far from the truth. | Requirements: All volunteers that participate in emergency service should be professional in attitude as well as performance. Emergency service activities by their inherit nature are dangerous and it is serious business. Because of this, it is imperative that every member of the fire company takes their position in the company seriously and professionally. After all, we are in the business of saving lives and property in our community. We encourage you to ask questions if you don’t know or are unsure. We are here to support one another and help each other in any way we can. •16 years of age •Have a level of physical ability to commensurate with applicable job related duties. A physical exam, along with a drug test, will be required once membership has been obtained. •Completed criminal records check •Be willing to work under adverse or dangerous conditions •School members must submit their most recent report card and meet the academic and eligibility requirements of their school. | Categories: Firefighter, EMT

Radnor Fire Co
Overview: The Radnor Fire Company of Wayne, Inc. (RFC) was founded in 1906 and is located at 121 S. Wayne Avenue in downtown Wayne. RFC protects the largest fire district in Radnor Township, Delaware County while the Ambulance service covers the entire Township. RFC also responds to what is commonly referred to as the 'Panhandle' in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County as the primary Fire/EMS provider. In 2017, under the direction of Chief Joseph Maguire, RFC responded to 721 to fire and rescue incidents, along with 2,219 emergency medical services calls. A dedicated group of volunteers and staff handled these incidents with a fleet of three modern fire engines, a 100' ladder truck, a rescue truck, three Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances and three emergency response support vehicles. RFC enhanced its service to the community on August 1, 2011 by beginning to provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) service. The Emergency Medical Services program has existed since 1947 and has seen its call volume triple since the 1980s. In 2018, RFC will be focusing its efforts on recruiting volunteers to serve as Firefighters and EMTs. The generosity of residents and businesses in Radnor and Tredyffrin continue to play a vital role in keeping fire company operations running 24x7x365. Mission The mission of the Radnor Fire Company of Wayne is to protect the lives and property of the residents, businesses, and visitors of Radnor and Tredyffrin Townships, and surrounding communities. Our Volunteers, teamed-up with our Career Personnel combine to form a dedicated force to support and serve the fire protection needs of Phoenixville and surrounding communities. We are always looking for additional help from our community to expand this team; be a Firefighter, Fire Police Officer or help with Administration & Fundraising. We are looking for volunteers in all of the following areas. <BR><BR> *Responders* <BR> The term “firefighter” generally covers all of the responders in our department, however some of our responders have specific roles such as Engineer/Operator – those who drive and operate the fire trucks, Emergency Medical Technician – those who render medical aid to injured persons, Fire Officers – those who supervise and direct our responders, Fire Police Officers – those who help direct and detour traffic around emergency scenes and also assist with crowd control, and of course the Firefighters who extinguish fires and mitigate other emergencies. The Fire Academies offer courses for all of these roles. The Department also holds in-house training drills several times each month. <BR><BR> *Administration & Fundraising* <BR> There is a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the organization functioning. Starting with a Board of Directors which meets monthly to decide the business activities of the organization. The Board is comprised of firefighters and community members alike. Several Committees comprised of Board members and non-board members meet periodically to research topics and provide recommendations to the Board. Some members help solely with fundraising activities such as our Holiday craft show. <BR><BR> *Junior Firefighters* <BR> Are you a Teenager or Parent of a Teenager looking for:<BR> - An activity that will provide discipline and life experiences?<BR> - Something that may provide a boost to a resume?<BR> - Something that may be a springboard to a career?<BR> - Additional social interaction?<BR> Our Junior Firefighter program allows teenagers age 16 & 17 to become a volunteer firefighter in a learning role. Junior Firefighters can do many of the things Firefighters do, with some limitations for additional safety and well-being as outlined by PA Child Labor Laws. Junior Firefighters may begin attending fire academy classes to become certified as a Firefighter or EMT. They may also respond on emergency calls, participate in in-house training, attend meetings, serve on committees, and help keep the firehouse and fire trucks ready for action. Most of our current firefighters began as Junior Firefighters, some over 40 years ago. In fact, all but one of our current Fire Officers began as Junior Firefighters in Phoenixville or surrounding areas. Several decided on life-long careers that directly related to their experience while a teenager, such as Career Firefighters, EMTs, Fire Marshals, and even a Flight Nurse on an Air-Medical Helicopter. <BR><BR> Whether leaving bed at 3AM to respond to activation of a fire alarm at a local business, attending weekly training drills, repairing a broken piece of equipment, or planning our next fundraiser, volunteers are working every day to operate the organization. Prospective members will be interviewed by our Membership & Nominations committee before being referred to our Board of Directors for a vote. <BR><BR> Training: Responders will be required to complete entry-level basic courses within one year. The initial Fire Academy Certification Course for a new firefighter recruit (Firefighter I) is a 188-hour course. These courses are generally held on nights and weekends and sometimes divided into four segments which can be completed two each in the Spring and Fall.
