The Lapwai Fire Department is housed within the Lapwai Community on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation. The intent of being a Volunteer Fire Fighter is to respond to fire alarms and emergency calls to protect lives and property of the community, Assess conditions and act quickly to extinguish and contain fires from spreading for both Structural and Wildland fire incidents. Immediate duties are as follows: Performing Structure, Wildland, and vehicle Firefighting, Equipment and Facilities Maintenance, Public Education, working with Mutual Aid partners, Law Enforcement, EMS, and the public at large. As a volunteer, the expectation for you (crew) to respond to emergency calls and to train in addition to your day jobs. There is not a schedule available for shifts. Emergency situations can occur at any time, day or night. It does not abide by holidays or weekends. So, it is critical for volunteers (when available) to standby to respond, should an emergency situation occur. | Requirements: Desire to be of service to the community. Understand that as a volunteer that being a volunteer firefighter is a 24-hour, 365-days-a-year commitment. To be a reliable and competent firefighting volunteer, a person might be on call constantly and must be trained Age 18+ years old at completion of training, possess valid Drivers License, pass background check, have good driving record, be in good health and physical condition, reside or be employed within department service response area, be willing to follow orders from fire department officers, work with other Emergency Services Agencies and assist the community in their time of need. Most fire gear will be provided for both Structural and Wildland fires except for Wildland boots.
