Wakulla County Fire/Rescue provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) Emergency Patient Transport, Fire Suppression, Rescue, and Vehicle Extrication. These services are delivered from four Stations that are staffed 24 hours 7 days per week by professional Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians or Paramedics who are usually dually certified in both Fire and EMS. In 2016, we responded to over 3900 calls, utilizing the knowledge, skills and expertise of 25 full time and 14 part-time staff, 46 volunteer fire fighters and 48 volunteer support members. In addition to the four career-staffed Stations, there are ten additional Volunteer Fire Stations that house fire suppression equipment and trucks when needed in the outlying areas of the County. The career members and the Volunteer Fire Departments continue to work together as one team to protect the residents and visitors of Wakulla County.. Wakulla County Fire Rescue also provides Fire Prevention & Public Education services. As part of our Fire Prevention Program, Fire Rescue is committed to ensuring that our children learn about fire safety from a young age. We reach out to the local schools and childcare facilities to teach students fire safety and how to respond in an emergency. Fire Rescue also interacts with the Senior Citizens Center to provide smoke detector checks to citizens. There are two main sources of funding for Fire/Rescue: the Municipal Services Taxing Unit (MSBU) for fire services and EMS billing for emergency services and transport. HISTORY: EMS was started in Wakulla County in 1972. It became the First Service in the Nation to have trained First Responders, and one of the first in Florida to provide Advanced Life Support (ALS). The first Volunteer Fire Department in Wakulla County started in 1966 when Ochlocknee Bay Volunteer Fire Department incorporated, with most others incorporating in the 1970’s. A full time professional fire department was established in 2007, and merged with EMS in 2010 to become Wakulla County Fire Rescue. In 2017, the Volunteer Fire Departments came under the umbrella of Wakulla County Fire Rescue to become one team fully united. | Requirements: STEPS TO BECOMING A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER WITH WCFR: 1.Complete a WCFR Volunteer Application (WCFR Volunteer Application) and email it to vfd@mywakulla.com. The application can also be mailed to or dropped off at WCFR Headquarters at 338 Trice Lane, Crawfordville, Florida 32327. 2.The Volunteer Coordinator will contact you, and if you are eligible to volunteer, they will schedule an interview with you. These Interviews are held once per month. 3.If you successfully complete the interview, you will receive a form to take to the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office to be fingerprinted. We will conduct a background and driving history check. 4.If you successfully complete the background and driving history checks, we will schedule you for a urine drug screen. If you successfully complete these steps, you may be approved for membership. Support members serve WCFR in many capacities. Being a support member is a great way to volunteer your time, using a special skill or talent you have, to help your community. Support members provide administrative support, assist with volunteer recruitment and retention, help with social events, and much more. To become a Volunteer Firefighter, there is a combination of online courses and in-person hands-on skills training that totals 260 hours over the course of one year. Successful completion of this training certifies you in the State of Florida as a Firefighter I, and is defined by Florida Statute. Corporate groups of 5 or more volunteers can team up to make a significant impact by assisting with essential food sorting, packing, and distribution tasks in the main warehouse. This opportunity fosters team building while helping to alleviate hunger in the Big Bend region.

Individual volunteers assist with sorting and packing nutritious food at the main warehouse. Responsibilities include preparing food for distribution to over 120 partner agencies, ensuring food security for vulnerable populations.

Community and school groups consisting of 5 or more volunteers can contribute to the fight against hunger by assisting with food sorting, packing, and other logistical tasks at the main warehouse. This is a rewarding way for groups to perform community service and support food distribution efforts.

Volunteers will engage with the community by offering free activities and experiences during the First Friday events. They will help promote the mission of local nonprofit organizations and earn volunteer hours.

Participate in occasional volunteer fieldwork opportunities alongside professional archaeologists. Volunteers will assist in archaeological digs and surveys to help preserve and understand the region's cultural history.

Conduct onsite evaluations of potential new homes for rescue boxers as part of the adoption process.

Provide a home environment for rescue boxers to evaluate their habits and behavior. BARC covers medical expenses while you provide daily care.

Assist in distributing educational materials and resources to local communities to raise awareness about human trafficking. Volunteers will engage with community members and provide information on available resources.

Assist in transporting boxers to and from vet appointments, shelters, and foster homes. Participate in the Canine Underground Railroad system for longer distances.

Help staff fundraising events to support BARC's mission. Engage with the community and raise awareness about rescue efforts.

Conduct training sessions for businesses and community groups to help them identify and respond to signs of human trafficking. Volunteers will be provided with materials and guidance to effectively deliver the training.

Join us in making a positive impact in the community by volunteering for various service projects. Volunteers will assist in organizing events, distributing resources, and supporting community outreach initiatives.

Assist at adoption events by helping set up, manage the event, and provide information to potential adopters. Volunteers may also help with dog handling and ensuring the safety of the animals during the event.
