The Cresskill Fire Department is a combination fire department, utilizing both paid and volunteer firefighters. Because of the combination department, the Borough of Cresskill benefits by the immediate response of paid personnel, complemented by volunteer firefighters. The department responds out of Fire Headquarters located at 51 Madison Ave. The department utilizes 3 engines, an aerial truck, a rescue truck, and 3 licensed ambulances. | Requirements: Appointment of members. No person shall hereafter become a member of the Volunteer Division except in accordance with the provisions of the Revised Statutes of New Jersey. Provide free academic support to public school students, helping them with literacy, basic math, and other academic skills. Volunteers are trained to use the most up-to-date approaches to literacy/academic support and mentoring.

Science Internship Coaches work with 10th Grade Science Research Scholars to apply for summer internships, ensuring all components of the applications are completed before deadlines.

YPIE Graduation Coaches develop meaningful relationships with Scholars, serve as conduits to broaden their horizons, provide connections to resources to help them reach their potential, and support them through high school graduation. Graduation Coaches meet with their Scholars two times per month and are provided a curriculum to guide those meetings.

Science Research Mentors assist students in conducting research, suggesting reading materials, providing feedback, and editing research papers. Mentors commit to a 2-year term.

Career Coaches mentor YPIE college juniors and seniors through the process of creating a personalized internship and job application plan, searching for opportunities, and preparing strong applications.

Starting in the summer between junior and senior year and continuing through December, YPIE Essay Coaches provide support to our Scholars and Fellows as they write their college essays, a critical part of the college application process.

Help prevent the loss of literacy skills in students during the summer break by engaging them in reading activities at local public libraries.

Volunteers assist clients during guided technology classes, helping with computer setup and exercises. Topics include safe password practices and using applications like Gmail and Google Docs. Available in Mount Kisco, Ossining, and Yonkers.

Assist elementary school students with homework and literacy skills after school. Volunteers include senior adults, college, and high school-aged mentors who engage students in academic development activities.

Volunteers assist the instructor with guided activities for children ages 0-4, while their parents attend parenting and child development classes. This program is available during the daytime in Mount Kisco, Ossining, and Yonkers.

College Zone Tutors work with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide individualized instruction in a variety of high school level subjects. Tutors commit to at least one day per week for two hours per day.

Volunteers assist the staff throughout the hospital and outpatient programs, providing services such as circulating books, assisting office staff, and helping at the Gift Shop and Front Desk. Volunteers are matched with appropriate assignments to support patients and nursing home residents.

Assist in building homes for families in need in Bergen County. Volunteers will work alongside future homeowners and other volunteers to construct affordable housing.

Assist with the maintenance and preservation of the gardens, including planting, weeding, and general upkeep. Volunteers will work under the guidance of experienced horticulturists to ensure the gardens remain a beautiful and welcoming space for visitors.

The Emerson Fire Department is actively seeking residents who are interested in serving their community by volunteering with our department. | Requirements: Firefighter applicants must be at least 18 years of age and are required to complete Firefighter I training at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute located in Mahwah, New Jersey. This six-month long training course was designed around the NFPA Standard 1001 and the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety Standard. Class is held twice per week, allowing students to acquire sufficient skills and knowledge that will enable him/her to function as an effective fire ground participant under the direct supervision of departmental officers. The course includes lectures, videos and slide/tape presentations in addition to practical exercises. Students must maintain a minimum score of 70% on both the written midterm and final exams as well as successful completion of a practical evaluation. There truly is no such thing as a routine call, and the abilities to think on the fly and to react and adapt to a constantly changing environment are critical. Firefighting is an ultra-hazardous job, and the dangers are always present, regardless of what type of call we are on. Responds to fire incidents and conducts tasks including interior attack, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, or fire-ground support operations as directed. Participates in emergency rescue operations and supports specialized teams including various types of rescue incidents such as fast water, dive, high angle, trench, auto extrication, and building collapse. Drives emergency vehicles operated by the department except for pumper and aerial apparatus. Assists in performing routine maintenance of all fire apparatus and tools of the department including non-powered tools such as axes pike poles, ladders, and other miscellaneous equipment. Participates in emergency management functions such as spotting for severe weather and storms and notifying the appropriate chain of command. Participates in public education programs by assisting in conducting fire department tours, demonstrations, and presentations. Participates in pre-fire analysis, in reviewing target hazards within the company district, and establishing actions to be taken at the time of an incident.
