There is a great deal of excitement and a sense of accomplishment that comes with reviving a patient using CPR, caring for a patient after a serious collision, or delivering a baby. The satisfaction, camaraderie, and experience received from the fire and rescue service is often beyond description. However, this business is not for everyone. Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) need courage, dedication, assertiveness, and above all a desire to help others in need. EMTs perform work that tests their abilities in uncertain and sometimes hazardous situations. Men and women age 16 and older who are in good physical condition and have the desire to serve as EMTs are eligible for membership. EMTs in the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department have nearly endless opportunities for training and advancement. Whether your dream is to be a paramedic or you would be happy being a basic EMT, we have a place for you. Your advancement is only limited by the level of certification, training, and experience you reach. | Requirements: Standby Duty RVFD volunteer personnel are organized into a minimum of six weeknight duty shifts. Each shift is officially known by its respectively assigned night of the week (i.e., Sunday through Friday). In addition to the weeknight shifts, RVFD volunteer personnel are organized into 8 Saturday night shifts who serve on a rotating basis. a. Weeknight Shifts – Standby duty hours are 1700 hours to 0700 hours Sunday through Friday. Members are considered late after 1900 hours. b. Saturday Night Shifts – Standby duty hours are 1700 hours Saturday until 0700 hours Sunday. Members are considered late after 1700 hours. Each shift rotates every six weeks to cover the Saturday shift. c. Members who wish to leave prior to 0700 hours must coordinate their departure time with their Shift Officer prior to 2100 hours. d. Any member unable to perform the overnight standby on their duty night must apply to the Standby Committee for a modified schedule. The member must provide specific hardship particulars that do not permit overnight participation. e. Junior members shall meet all requirements of the standby system with the exception of being released from duty at 2300 hours on school nights. Montgomery County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association
Participation with the Fire/Rescue services in not necessarily for everyone. Depiction of the service on television series such as Third Watch, ER, etc..., though often based on real life situations, are not an accurate portrayal of what one necessarily does or observes in the Fire/Rescue Service. The work is physically strenuous, emotionally challenging, and high stress. Service providers have to deal with extremely noisy, dirty work environments and are exposed to unsightly, disturbing sights on a regular basis. The rewarding aspects of the service is the knowledge of a job well done, having the ability to help someone in need, and often having made a difference in someone's life. It is often a thankless job with few tangible rewards, a lot of training and little recognition. You need to ask yourself if "this is for you?" | Requirements: The first step in joining a local fire department is to fill out an application. As part of the process the recruiter will contact you to speak with you about your available opportunities, answer any questions you may have, and provide you with expectations as a volunteer in Montgomery County.
