The Edgartown Fire Department provides Fire/Rescue and ALS ambulance services for approximately 5,168 people in a town consisting of 27sq miles of land and 95sq miles of water. We are one of six fire departments on the island of Martha's Vineyard. The majority of our membership are stipend compensated volunteers. There is a mix of firefighters, EMT's, and dual role members. ALS ambulance services are provided by full time Paramedics and volunteer EMT's. We use and maintain 7 pieces of apparatus, 2 ALS ambulances, 2 boats, and several ancillary vehicles. The Mission of the Edgartown Fire Department is to provide quality service to the community through progressive Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical responses. As a volunteer firefighter you will: * Respond to fire alarms and extinguish fires as a member of a team. * Protect life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials mitigation, rescue and fire prevention duties. * Engage in firefighting activities including, laying hose, raising ladders, and performing fire combat operating fire trucks, power tools, and equipment. * Provide emergency medical services at your level of training and certification (EMT, Paramedic or First Responder). * Participate in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, rescue, EMS, hazardous materials and related subjects. * Assist with the inspection of buildings, hydrants, static water sources, and other structures and systems in fire prevention programs. Participates in the preplanning of buildings and hazards. * Perform general maintenance and cleaning of fire & rescue facilities, trucks, and equipment. * Provide programs to the community about safety, first aid, accident & illness prevention and fire prevention. * Participate in natural disaster operations to protect people and property during blizzards and hurricanes. * Teach others to be firefighters and EMS providers. Being a WBFD volunteer firefighter is about a lot more than just putting out fires and treating patients.
