The Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (Volunteer FF/EMT) serves the community by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. They perform within the scope of the policies and procedures of Thompson Fire Department and they perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue, hazardous material responses, training, building inspections, and public education. The Volunteer FF/EMT normally works under the supervision of a company officer and is expected to function effectively as part of a highly trained team. They are also expected to perform their duties under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases. The area geography consists of a rural and suburban landscape as well as 11 miles of interstate and state highways. The department responds to approximately 450-500 calls per year. We also have Special Teams Opportunities. Our Firefighters receive a bi-weekly incentive of $20 per call (7am-11pm) and $30 per night call (11pm-7am) for responding to emergencies. We will pay for all your training if you are not already a firefighter and are interested in becoming a volunteer! Protect citizens during emergencies, extinguishes fires, executes rescues, Mitigates chemical spills. Prevents fire damage by conducting surveys and inspections for hazards and enforcing codes. Prepares citizens to prevent fire damage by developing and conducting educational and training programs. Ensures availability of water at fire scene by pressurized hydrant or by establishing an alternate water supply method. Driving and operating equipment, combating and extinguishing fires. Ensure operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, and troubleshooting malfunctions. Notifies supervisor of needed repairs. Evaluate new equipment and techniques. Maintain operations by following policies and procedures and reporting needed changes. Provide information by completing reports. Maintain fire station building, grounds, and related equipment by completing maintenance schedules. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
