The Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (Volunteer FF/EMT) serves the community by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. They perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue, hazardous material responses, training, building inspections and public education. The Volunteer FF/EMT normally works under the supervision of a company officer and is expected to function effectively as part of a highly trained team. They are also expected to perform their duties under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases. That’s why we need people with a strong desire to help others, and people with the courage and dedication to do the job. Because the job is so important, we make sure that all of our firefighters are expertly trained and properly equipped to get the job done. Our volunteers have many occupations. We have members who are executives, police officers, nurses, business owners, landscapers, lawyers, factory workers, and many more. We have male and female members. Our members do not have to be a certain type of person, they just have to want to serve others. We are a volunteer department with an ALL volunteer Staff. We respond to many different types of incidents, some examples are: Vehicle accidents/vehicle fires, Structure fires, Hazardous Material leaks/spills, Water Rescues, Trench Rescues, Collapse Rescues, 1st Responder Medical Assists. POSITION SUMMARY The Firefighter’s role is to protect life and property through firefighting and EMS activities often performed under conditions which require strenuous physical exertion. Major elements of a Firefighter's work are the participation in company inspection activities performed by fire companies, supervised drills, and training in firefighting and EMS skills. Some time is spent in special and routine maintenance of equipment and apparatus and routine care of buildings and grounds, as well as public education activities. Work at the fire station and scenes of fires, is normally performed under close supervision in accordance with well defined procedures, and is inspected in process and upon completion by a Company Officer. Occasionally, members in this position may be required to relieve a position of higher rank and when so assigned, are responsible for the management of all company programs and the supervision of assigned personnel and equipment at the scene of the fire until relieved of command by an officer of higher rank. General volunteers assist with transporting dogs, organizing special events, and performing data entry and clerical tasks. Some tasks can be completed from home, providing flexibility for volunteers.

Participate in the Vision Zero Task Force meetings to help strategize and implement plans for reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Louisville. Volunteers will engage in discussions and contribute ideas to promote safer streets.

Foster caregivers provide temporary homes for dogs with minor to moderate illnesses or injuries until they are adopted. Volunteers must ensure their own dogs are up-to-date on vaccines and take foster dogs to vet appointments in the Louisville, KY area.

Assist guests with questions, provide onboard information and other assistance, and assist with special events as needed. Volunteers should be interested in learning and talking about riverboats, the Ohio River, and the city of Louisville.

Assemble flower and balloon bouquets ordered by guests to be delivered on cruises. This role requires creativity and attention to detail.

Assist guests with wayfinding and answering questions, both on the wharf and in the ticket office. Volunteers should be enthusiastic about helping locals and tourists enjoy their river cruise experience.

Provide detailed information about the boats, the Ohio River, and the city of Louisville. This position requires additional training and a passion for education and history.

Conduct home visits for potential adopters to ensure their homes are safe and ready for a Weimaraner. Volunteers will travel up to 25 miles one-way and complete a checklist form.

Provide a loving temporary home to a rescued puppy or adult dog while they wait for their forever home. Responsibilities include caring for the dog's daily needs and helping them adjust to home life.

Participate in planning and working at special events to support the rescue's mission. Tasks may include event setup, coordination, and interacting with the public.
