An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate the ability to perform, each essential function satisfactory. 1. Responds to fire calls, rescue calls, and other emergencies. Participates in fire containment and suppression, auto extrication and other rescue activities. Operates a wide range of firefighting and rescue equipment, apparatus, tools, vehicles and other implements utilized in the line of duty. 2. Assumes command of incident scenes and maintains command until relieved by a higher ranking, career officer. Provides overall scene management, directs personnel and allocates equipment according to established strategies and tactics. 3. Maintains firefighting and rescue equipment and apparatus in a ready status at all times. Performs daily cleaning and inspections of fire vehicles, apparatus and equipment. Completes standard preventive maintenance duties according to established schedule and keeps related records. Coordinates major repairs with the City garage. 4. Assists in the development and maintenance of fire strategy pre-plans on commercial and industrial structures. Conducts related inspections and updates right-to-know and other hazardous materials information. 5. Participates in training programs and drills as appropriate. Assists in the planning, coordination and tracking of part-time firefighter training activities. 6. Assists with departmental record keeping. Posts fire runs and reports in computer, completes related forms and paperwork. 7. Participates in researching equipment, apparatus, gear and related items as requested. Serves on committees. 8. Answers the station telephone and greets walk-in visitors. Provides general information and issues burn permits. 9. Participates in the development and implementation of fire prevention programs. Assists in planning and conducting station open houses, tours, demonstrations, and related programs. Attends school and community programs and makes presentations. | Requirements: • Educational requirements include high school diploma or the equivalent. • The ability to become certified within one year of hire as a Fire Fighter I and 11, including hazardous materials training, is required. Certification at the time of hire is preferred. • A valid Michigan driver's license and an insurable driving record are required, along with the ability to complete specialized driver's training courses related to emergency vehicles. • The ability to satisfy background investigation and drug testing is required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee 's environment can range from the fire station setting to highly dangerous fire suppression or other rescue situations. Physical demands, therefore, range from sitting to the enormous physical exertion associated with firefighting. The following physical demands and environmental characteristics will be encountered by employees at varying frequencies while performing the duties of this job: standing; walking; running; using hands to finger, handle, or feel; reaching with hands and arms; climbing or balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; talking or hearing; and smelling. The employee is also required to lift and/or move objects of very heavy weight. Vision is required in this position. The employee must maintain the physical ability to perform the duties of this job. While firefighting, the employee is exposed to fire, wet and/or mud conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions: extreme heat, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and risk of electrical shock.
