Adult volunteers interested in helping as firefighters or in non-fire support roles should contact us. Opportunities vary throughout the year. Volunteering for the Sunderland Fire Department will include various tasks and training that all revolve around the core idea of preserving life and property in the Town of Sunderland. As a Volunteer Firefighter you will be trained how to safely operate en-route to and on the scene of an emergency. Firefighting tasks include but are not limited to: combating, extinguishing and preventing fires of all types, responding to motor vehicle accidents, HAZMAT responses, etc. Members may also be driving and operating fire apparatus, using power tools including the jaws of life, and learning fire-ground operating procedures which include strategy and tactics as well as various safety techniques. All fire department members must also become certified as a Massachusetts First Responder and have received training in CPR within 12 months of hire. All minimum required training for this position is provided in-house. Members meet each Tuesday, and train on average 3 nights per month. All applicants must meet with the Fire Chief for an interview before filling out the application. New members are sworn in as Probationary Members, giving them roughly a year to settle in.
