Or, perhaps you are curious about what it entails to be a member of the department. Over the years a lot has changed in the fire service and with the Guilderland Fire Department. Equipment evolves, training increases and the types of incidents the department responds to has grown quite a bit. One thing that never changes however is the sense of family, community and tradition which is a large part of the fire service. When you join the department, you become part of our family. Our members are a close-knit group of men and women whose primary focus is to work and train hard so that we are ready to help anyone in our community when the need arises. The fire service is very family oriented and the Guilderland Fire Department is no different. Our members families are often invited to picnics, awards dinners, baseball games, day trips, community events etc. In fact, our members are so close that often families even choose to vacation together. If you would like to learn more, we would love to setup a time for you to come visit the station. We can provide you with an overview of the department along with a station tour. The Volunteer Firefighter serves the community by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. They perform within the scope of the policies and procedures of the Altamont Fire Department and they perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency rescue, hazardous material responses, training, building inspections and public education. The Volunteer FF normally works under the supervision of a company officer and is expected to function effectively as part of a highly trained team. They are also expected to perform their duties under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases. The work performance of a Volunteer firefighter is continuously evaluated for general knowledge, skill proficiency, and ability to work as part of a team. Any deficiencies are corrected through remedial training. | Requirements: Must be at least 15 years of age at the time of application; The Volunteer Firefighter rides an emergency vehicle in response to fire, rescue, and hazardous materials response/mitigation and routine requests for help or assistance. In the performance of their duties, the Volunteer Firefighter places equipment, lays and connects hose; operates high-capacity pumps and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical extinguishers, safety belts, lines and hooks and uses self-contained breathing apparatus. The Volunteer Firefighter may carry heavy objects and equipment and rescue injured or trapped victims. The Volunteer FF is required to attend regularly scheduled training in order to maintain the high level of knowledge, skill and ability necessary to function safely and effectively as a firefighter in accordance with State protocols and standard operating procedures. | Categories: Firefighter

Assist with office tasks such as filing, data entry, and organizing events. Volunteers support the administrative functions of the organization to ensure smooth operations.

Support the planning and execution of fundraising events such as galas and golf tournaments, helping to raise funds for the organization's mission.

Visit clients in their homes to provide companionship and social interaction. This role helps reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness among clients.

Provide respite care for family caregivers by spending time with their loved ones. This allows caregivers to take a break and attend to their own needs.

Provide transportation services to clients, helping them get to medical appointments, shopping, and other necessary errands. This role is crucial in ensuring clients maintain their independence and access essential services.

Volunteers are needed to assist with therapeutic riding lessons, which require a lead walker to control the horse and two side walkers to assist the rider. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and willing to commit at least one night a week.

Volunteers are needed at fundraising events to support the facility's work. Responsibilities include taking donations and helping with parking. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and willing to commit at least one night a week.

Participate in a purpose-driven social campaign supporting the diabetes community by sharing videos or pictures of healthy activities. Challenge others to do the same and tag the campaign to spread awareness.

Want to volunteer while attending one of MHLC’s guided hikes? Being a hike sweeper means ensuring the group stays together on the hike, taking photos, and reporting back with a few details about the excursion.

Volunteers are needed to greet the Nature Bus riders at Fisher Trail (MHLC's new trail in partnership with Five Rivers Environmental Center). The 2024 schedule is coming soon!

If you prefer to help indoors, we can use your time and skills in the office assisting with our mailings, data collection, and distribution of other promotional materials.

MHLC hosts several large events each year, including the fall fundraiser and new preserve openings. Volunteers help set up and take down these events, managing a variety of tasks that make these events a success.

Love working outdoors? Join our trail team to help improve and maintain trails at our preserves in Albany, Schenectady, and Montgomery Counties. Land stewardship activities are great for groups that want to volunteer.

Volunteer as a preserve steward and help us monitor and maintain one of our 22 public nature preserves. Walk the trail networks weekly or monthly, complete light maintenance, and notify us of any significant maintenance needs or vandalism. Training will be provided.

If you love the Conservancy and want to tell everybody about our preserves and easement program, consider volunteering at a local fair or festival. Outreach volunteers hand out educational materials and talk to people about our work.

Join the Friends of the Rail Trail (FORT) Committee on the Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail volunteering as a Trail Ambassador to guide visitors, patrol, and serve as trail custodians.
