Volunteers in the We Honor Veterans program assist Veterans and their families through companionship visits and special recognition events. Veteran volunteers are highly needed, but being a Veteran is not required to serve our Veteran patients.

Pet Therapy Volunteers bring licensed therapy dogs to visit hospice and palliative care patients in their homes or at facilities. This role requires a licensed pet therapy dog and their human companion.

Bereavement support volunteers assist with activities and events for families following the loss of their loved ones, including memorial events and support group meetings. Specialized training is provided.

Office Volunteers assist with clerical tasks such as copying, filing, and preparing mailings at the main reception desk. Scheduling is flexible during normal business hours based on availability.

Home hospice volunteers visit our hospice and/or palliative care patients wherever they call home, providing companionship through conversation, reading, or watching movies. Visits are typically limited to 2 hours or less, and volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

Medical Guardian volunteers assist with delivering and setting up Medical Guardian Help Buttons. This role is flexible and requires minimal time commitment, with training provided.

Volunteers are needed to facilitate bi-weekly meetings for the Phoenix Rising Program, which provides grief support for children and families. Specialized in-person training is required.

Assist with the Northwest Indiana Beekeepers Association's booth at the Lake County State Fair. Volunteers will help engage with the public, provide information about beekeeping, and support the setup and maintenance of the booth.

Assist in the preschool classroom, supporting the instructor and engaging with young children in educational activities. Volunteers must be 18+, high school graduates, and complete a background check.

Assist young students in grades K-2 with their schoolwork and help foster a love for learning. Volunteers must be 18+, high school graduates, and complete a background check.

CASA volunteers work in conjunction with child protective services and the juvenile justice system to advocate for the needs of abused and neglected children. They give voice to children in juvenile court proceedings and ensure that their best interests are prioritized.

Hospice Center Volunteers visit patients at the VNA Arthur B. and Ethel V. Horton Hospice Center in Valparaiso, providing companionship and assistance during their stay. Duties include visiting patients, welcoming visitors, and performing clerical tasks.

Supervise dogs at adoption events, take them for play dates, and provide much-needed exercise and socialization.

Provide a temporary home for dogs needing time to grow, stabilize, and socialize before finding their forever homes. BARC provides all necessary supplies and support.
