As a volunteer firefighter, your duties are to educate the community on fire prevention and to respond to fire and medical related emergencies. Our firefighters support the fire department in all activities including emergency response, fundraising, maintenance, and other special events. Upon approval of the application and background check, an interview with the Department Chiefs will be scheduled. Candidates successfully passing the interview will be given 60 days to schedule and complete a physical through Work Right at the Duluth Clinic. After the results of the physical have been received and approved, a department agility test will be given. When these steps have been successfully completed, the Fire Chief will notify the candidate of his or her approval to begin the probationary process. Probationary fire fighters will become active members after serving not less than one year and no more than two years and completing the following probationary requirements: •Successful completion of a Firefighter I & II course or equivalent. •Successful completion of a First Responder (at minimum) course qualified by the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board or equivalent. •Successful completion of the minimum training requirements established in departmental policies. •Successful driving and operation tests of all apparatus and equipment owned by the department. | Requirements: -Be more than eighteen (18) years of age. -Be a resident of Hermantown. Assist in building relationships within the community by participating in various community activities and events. Volunteers will work alongside individuals to help them engage and integrate into community life.

Horticulture Volunteers are vital to keeping the zoo grounds looking colorful all year long! They work with the zoo grounds crew to create and maintain gardens on the grounds, work with the greenhouse, assist with indoor plant upkeep, and help with seasonal outdoor preparations (spring set up and winterizing).

Special Event Volunteers do a variety of jobs at our zoo events including set-up, zoo decoration, greeting guests, running games, supervising the grounds and event clean-up. Special Event Volunteers are critical in ensuring our special events run smoothly.

Education volunteers are the zoo’s frontline educators! Their main responsibility is to connect zoo visitors with our animals. This is done primarily by using educational props and artifacts to enhance visitor understanding of the animals by interpreting what they are observing.

Volunteer teacher aides help facilitate nature-based play in our licensed childcare center, Lake Superior Zoo School. Duties include assisting with outdoor exploration, engaging with children during daily hikes, reading to children, and helping with set-up and clean-up.

Volunteers work under the direct supervision of the Animal Care staff. General responsibilities include cleaning animal holdings, diet preparation, and general housekeeping. Volunteers must be able to clean, sweep, hose, cut up diets, lift heavy loads, and follow specific directions.

Guest Experience Volunteers help provide a great experience for our guests by assisting with tasks that support the cleanliness of the zoo.

Serve on the board to help drive and support the mission of the Clubs. Board members bring their experience and vision to guide the organization.

Assist in planning and executing fundraising events that provide essential income to support programming at the Clubs. Volunteers are crucial in making these events successful.

Use your special talents or area of expertise to help plan and execute events. Committee members contribute their time, energy, and ideas to ensure the success of the Clubs' events.

Assist professional staff in implementing programs and special events at various club branch locations. Opportunities include mentoring, tutoring, teaching a class, coaching, or playing games with young people.

Join the volunteer trail crews to help build and maintain the trail network. Opportunities are available all summer long, requiring a variety of skill sets for tasks such as debris pickup, moving small rocks, and clearing fallen branches.

We hold special events throughout the year to raise vital funds for our work. We rely on volunteers to help make these events a success.

Get in on the action! We always need caring, mature adults to meet with the many teens we serve. Volunteers must go through a screening process. We offer on-going training to help you be encouraged and effective in your role.
