Become part of the tradition, become a volunteer firefighter for the Toronto Volunteer Fire Department. The Toronto Fire Department is a combination department with 6 career firefighters and as many as 31 volunteers. TFD has been serving the City of Toronto and surrounding area since 1888. TVFD picks up the cost of required fire fighting class, and often approves Firefighter 1/Firefighter 2 certification programs. Assist in answering questions and talking to visitors at the Education Center during weekends from May through September. Volunteers are paired with another volunteer and receive training before starting.

Build birdhouses to be sold at the Center gift shop to earn money for projects at the Education Center. Ideal for those with carpentry skills.

Provide interpretative tours and educational programs for school, scout, and community groups. Times vary based on group needs.

Help plant, weed, trim, and maintain the flower beds around the Education Center. Ideal for those with a green thumb who enjoy working with plants.

Assist with maintenance jobs and help keep the Wildlife Center clean. Volunteers are needed for various tasks around the center.

Did you know that we accept junior members? No? Well, let me fill you in. Anyone that is at least fourteen years of age and, of course with permission from your parents, can join Hillndale Volunteer Fire Department as a junior member. Keep in mind that your education comes first, so we will periodically contact your parents and see how you are doing in school. Keeping good grades is a requirement to be a junior member. Between the ages of fourteen and eighteen, we will work to educate you and prepare you to become a full member of the volunteer fire service. Yes, you are allowed to go on emergency calls, but restrictions do apply. Once you reach seventeen years of age and are close to the end of your senior year of high school, you can participate in both a volunteer firefighter and EMT training course.
