The Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (Volunteer FF/EMT) serves the community by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. They perform within the scope of the policies and procedures of Utica Twp. Fire & Rescue and they perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue, hazardous material responses, training, building inspections and public education. The Volunteer FF/EMT normally works under the supervision of a company officer and is expected to function effectively as part of a highly trained team. They are also expected to perform their duties under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases. Volunteers assist in taking admissions, operating the museum store, answering the phone, and greeting visitors. This role is essential to the daily operation of Locust Grove and requires a commitment to being dependable and punctual.

Volunteers assist in taking admissions, baking, concessions, parking, set up, and clean up for weekend events such as the Gardeners’ Fair, Antiques Markets, and Market Fair. Events are held once a month from April through July and September through December.

Volunteers work with the staff gardener in weeding, planting, and maintaining the flower beds, herb garden, and quadrant gardens. Volunteers must initially meet with the staff gardener but can arrange to work at their convenience.

Volunteers complete a training course to conduct tours at Locust Grove. Docents can also train in crafts of the period and give costumed demonstrations, welcoming visitors and sharing historical insights.

Assist in planning, setting up, and organizing events to raise funds and educate the public about adopting Pugs. This includes hanging fliers and assisting with donations for raffle baskets.

Provide essential transportation for Pugs, including getting them to foster homes, veterinary appointments, and events. A valid driver’s license and car insurance are required.

Assist with preparing mailings, writing thank you notes, making phone calls to prospective adopters, sending emails, and keeping others informed of activities. May also include working on the website or monitoring the blog.

Help by checking local shelters and online platforms for Pugs that need assistance from Bluegrass Pug Rescue. This is a rewarding role that ensures Pugs are taken to safe places for care.

Assist in maintaining the Paintbox Garden, a vibrant oasis of color inspired by Color Theory. Volunteers will help with planting, succession planting, and ensuring blooms from Spring to Autumn, while also supporting pollinator-friendly practices.

Become a Garden Guide at Waterfront Botanical Gardens and play an essential role in educating and inspiring guests during visiting hours. This position requires completion of training and a commitment to providing a positive experience for visitors.

Volunteers are needed for St. Joe’s Picnic For the Kids, which is the largest fundraiser hosted by the home. Opportunities include being a Zone Leader, working in raffle or gaming booths, and serving beer. Volunteers typically work for four-hour shifts and can help with set-up and clean-up before and after the event.

Volunteers are needed for childcare during monthly support groups and training sessions on weekdays from 6-8pm. Must be at least 18 years old or older to participate.

We welcome volunteers to assist with maintaining our Child Development Center grounds and classrooms. Tasks may include spreading sand, dirt, or mulch; cleaning classroom chairs and tables; and general playground upkeep. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old; those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult supervisor.
