What does it take to be a firefighter? Many of our members have entered the company with no previous firefighting experience. Upper Macungie Township firefighters pride themselves on a strong foundation of training that begins on the first day. While formal training to ride is eventually required, new members are able to ride in a limited capacity after receiving basic training. Initial formal training consists of the Fire Fighter I class, offered through the Bucks County Community College Public Safety Training Program. This class is approximately 190 hours, and spans a total of five months. Students receive instruction in theories of fire behavior and suppression, forcible entry, ventilation, property salvage, basic hazardous materials training, as well as first aid and CPR. Most of the class is hands-on and successful completion results in National Certification as a Firefighter. Upon completing the Fire Fighter I class, members are welcome to take additional specialty classes that are applicable to our operations that interest them. Such classes include vehicle rescue, rope rescue, hazardous materials, and advanced firefighting operations. Perhaps the most important aspect of our training comes from our weekly drill nights which are held every Tuesday night beginning at 6:30 pm. Whitehall Bureau of Fire is a progressive Volunteer Fire department with five stations. We are an all-hazards department. Accepting all volunteer applicants! We are always looking for dedicated and motivated individuals to join our firehouse to assist in our service of the community. We are a small department located in Stowe, Pennsylvania, which is adjacent to the Borough of Pottstown. We service 3 municipalities in 2 counties as parts of our first due run area. West Pottsgrove Township, Portions of Pottstown Borough, and portions of Douglass Township Berks County. Our department has 4 pieces of apparatus to service these municipalities which are, a Tanker, an Engine, a Squad (light rescue truck) and a Fire Police unit. We are always open to accepting applications of current firefighters that would like to volunteer to help our department, or, if fighting fires isn't for you, we have positions open to drive the apparatus, or be a member of the support staff! If you are new to volunteer firefighting and would like to learn, we offer in house training and, provide access to the fire academy at no cost to you! We have many positions available and are willing to train the right person.
