11th Hour Volunteers receive additional training to provide companionship to patients and families during the final hours of a patient's life. This role requires emotional strength and a compassionate approach to support those in their last moments.

Kings Creek Volunteer Fire Department is located east of Lenoir NC on Highway 18. The fire district serves approximately 2,800 citizens and responds to approximately 300 calls a year. The fire district is mostly timberland and draws minimal tax revenue annually for the departments operational budget. Due to the nation wide shortage of volunteers and to the fact that most of the departments volunteers work outside of the fire district, Kings Creek Volunteer Fire Department must maintain paid staffing during the day time hours. During evenings and nights, Kings Creek Volunteer Fire Department is operated solely by volunteers. Staffing during the daytime hours with only one person, costs nearly one quarter of the annual budget. Aging equipment has also cost the department over $24,000 annually in apparatus maintenance costs. The one newer apparatus has an annual loan payment of $48,000. This leaves very little funding for operations and new equipment purchases.
