This position of firefighter/EMT involves responsibility for participating in the provision of emergency medical services and the performance of rescue, fire suppression, and fire prevention duties. This work also involves the operation of fire and emergency medical services equipment, vehicles, apparatus, and the maintenance of such. Firefighter/EMTs are required to participate in the performance of hazardous tasks and skilled medical treatment under emergency conditions which may involve strenuous exertion under such handicaps as fire, heat, smoke, and confined surroundings. Although firefighting and emergency medical services work are the most difficult and responsible areas of activity, a substantial portion of time is spent training and studying methods, techniques, and procedures, and in routine duties in the care of and maintenance of Fire Department property and equipment.· This work is performed in accordance with general instructions and well-defined procedures, and is reviewed through observation, inspections, and reports for results obtained. This is a public safety service job based in trust, credibility, and competency. It is a critical requirement of this position that the incumbent displays the desire and ability to perform and behave (on-duty, as well as off-duty) in a manner that does not damage or endanger the loss of trust with the public, coworkers, and other public safety forces. A firefighter/EMR with the Wauseon Fire Department will protect life and property by performing hazardous tasks under emergency conditions. This work involves close contact with toxic gases, explosive mixtures, and other dangerous materials. A portion of work consists of the performance of various duties in the maintenance of a fire station, and the preventative and corrective maintenance of trucks and equipment. A position in this class requires excellent physical condition and aptitude for mechanical work. Orders of superiors must be executed promptly and efficiently. A firefighter must readily become familiar with modem firefighting, fire prevention, and emergency medical treatment methods and procedures. The work requires strict adherence to department rules, regulations, and standard operating guidelines. Superiors make assignments of specific tasks and indicate methods and procedures to be followed. Assignments may be made through either oral or written instructions. Work is often under close supervision; however, there are many times that courses of actions must be determined by the firefighter.
