Volunteering in the fire service is an excellent way to give back to your community. Not only is the fire service rewarding in what you do on emergencies but you also build strong bonds with your fellow firefighters. The fire service has a very deeply rooted history of many traditions and values, one being brotherhood. This bond is stronger than no other. The people you hang out with at the firehouse, the team that you respond with on calls, begins to become a second family once you join and the firehouse becomes a home away from home. Whatever motivates you to volunteer, everyone gains self-satisfaction of being their best when other are dealing with what may be the worst times of their life. When it comes to responding to emergencies, no one call is the same. Everytime the alarm goes off, we are faced with a different challenge to solve. We stand ready to respond 24/7, everyday of the year, in every weather condition possible. Anytime the alarm sounds, we respond. We train on many different types of emergencies ranging from structure fire, to heart attacks, to car accidents, to childbirths and any other imaginable emergency in between. Day or night we may have to use these skills, and very often under potentially stressful and emotional circumstances. Yet these are just some of the many factors that make this profession so personally rewarding. Volunteering in the fire service may be one of the most important decisions you may make in your life, however you won't regret it. We are a very progressive department that currently is staffed with 40 firefighters including some that are also Paramedics and Emt's. We currently operate out of two stations with 3 Engines,1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Tower Ladder, 2 Light Rescues all under the direction of 3 Fire Chief's. We run approximately 700-800 calls of service a year. The North Syracuse Fire Department offers a free room and board program for student who are attending local colleges. Each bunk-in is provided a place to live during their college semester. In exchange for the free room and board the student attends weekly fire department training and provides a service as a volunteer firefighter during a scheduled shift. Our facilities are close to all Syracuse, NY area colleges and offers all the amenities needed for students.
