The backbone of our organization is the volunteer firefighter, the person willing to set their normal life aside in order to protect the lives and property of others. Yet there is far more to being a volunteer firefighter than simply going into burning buildings. Today’s firefighters are also specialists in providing pre-hospital medical care and in dealing with hazardous materials spills and leaks. They are representatives of the community as a whole, rendering aid to anyone regardless of their background or beliefs. They are educators, teaching young and old about safety and danger. They are role models, displaying values and capabilities that everyone can appreciate. And they are dedicated to their craft, putting in time through training, maintenance, and other activities to make sure both they and the whole department are ready to face whatever may come. It is not always easy or pleasant, but those who choose to take part are rewarded with a sense of pride and belonging that are incomparable with anything else. It is for this reason that so many who become firefighters stick with it for years and years. If commitment, camaraderie, and challenge are words that interest you then firefighting is definitely something you should consider. | Requirements: Elkin Fire Department relies heavily upon the talents of dedicated individuals willing to donate time to our community. Becoming a volunteer firefighter can be an exciting and rewarding experience. No former training is required, and all equipment and training will be provided free of charge. All it takes from you is a commitment to serve and the willingness to learn. Click here for more information on these opportunities. | Categories: EMT, Firefighter, Junior Members

Thank you for your interest in serving Elkin as a volunteer firefighter. As a volunteer, you will be joining a proud tradition that dates back to the very beginning of our nation, with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin among the many founding fathers who were also involved in the volunteer fire service. Today, volunteers still comprise a majority of our nation’s fire service. In fact, 70% of all firefighters are volunteers, with over one million volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel in the U.S. Half of all Americans live in communities served by fire departments that are either volunteer or a combination of volunteer and career (full-time and paid). In addition to providing life-saving services, these volunteers save communities across the nation a significant amount of money. It would cost U.S. taxpayers an estimated $140.7 billion every year if all the volunteer first responders were replaced with career staff. | Requirements: By becoming a volunteer firefighter, you will play a crucial role in protecting your neighbors from disasters and emergencies of all kinds. You will also be joining a tight-knit group of men and women dedicated to providing life-saving services to those who live in, visit and travel through Elkin. Being a volunteer first responder is very demanding and requires a great deal of commitment and training. As a volunteer firefighter, you will be required to: Attend department training sessions on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. Complete the Basic Firefighter Certification. and can expect to: Perform physically demanding work. Spend extended periods of time outside in inclement weather. Be called out at any hour of the day or night. | Categories: Firefighter
