The East Freehold Fire Company is looking for Junior Firefighters who want to make a difference in their community. This program will guide and teach our members the science of firefighting in anticipation of becoming certified firefighters upon turning 18 years old. As a junior member, education is a priority. School grade must be kept up to par of the member's parents. Junior firefighters are allowed to answer fire calls (in accordance with the State of New Jersey Child Labor Laws), attend Junior Firefighter drills and meetings, partake in free company related drills and activities, and much more. Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, the Volunteer Fire Fighter performs advanced firefighting work in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires and responding to emergency calls which include vehicle entrapment and other rescue situations. Established in 1953, the Jackson Township First Aid Squad is a volunteer-staffed EMS agency which provides 9-1-1 ambulance service to Jackson Township every evening between the hours of 6 pm and 5 am every day, 365 days a year. Every year the Squad answers approximately 2,000 calls for service, and transports more than 1,000 patients to area hospitals. A 501(c)(3) tax exempt, non-profit corporation, the Squad is almost wholly supported by donations and does not bill for its ambulance transports. Many of the 60+ members of the Squad are New Jersey Department of Health certified Emergency Medical Technicians, who are fully qualified to provide basic life support services. Several members hold higher qualifications, including paramedics and nurses. The Squad's members staff five duty crews, which operate out of our building on East Veteran's Highway. During duty hours, two ambulances are continuously staffed to provide emergency response. The Squad's members together donate thousands of hours to serving the people of Jackson Township. On an annual basis, members respond to varied calls, from those requiring CPR, to motor vehicle accidents, to sick children, to fall victims. Wayside Community Fire Company was founded in 1919. The cardinal function of the department at this time was fighting brush fire, mostly by using tanks carried on the backs of the fire fighters. This activity earned the department the nickname of “Stump Jumpers”. The original firehouse was located at the triangular corner of Wayside Road and Green Grove Road. The fire company remained in the original 2 story firehouse until 1964 when a newer 1 story firehouse was built at the same location. Today, Wayside Fire Company occupies a modern 5-bay firehouse located at 2 Volunteer Way, near the corner of Asbury Avenue and Heritage Boulevard. The company operates a ladder truck, an engine and a heavy rescue truck along with several support vehicles. Wayside members train tirelessly to keep up their skills.
