The main responsibilities of a Volunteer Firefighter are to assist people in distress, rescue fire victims and extinguish fires as quickly as possible. To accomplish these goals, a Volunteer Firefighter must perform a wide range of tasks. We reviewed several job listings to determine the primary duties of a Volunteer Firefighter. Inspect Equipment Communities rely on Volunteer Firefighters to inspect and maintain fire trucks, ladders, hoses and other fire-fighting equipment. Volunteer Firefighters regularly inspect their equipment for cracks, leaks, holes and other signs of damage. If a piece of equipment is damaged beyond repair, the Volunteer Firefighter submits a request for a replacement. Administer First Aid In addition to fighting fires, Volunteer Firefighters also respond to auto accidents and other emergencies. When responding to a fire or accident scene, a Volunteer Firefighter may have to administer CPR or perform other first-aid procedures. With special training, a Volunteer Firefighter may also perform basic life-support procedures. Suppress Fires A Volunteer Firefighter uses a variety of techniques to control and extinguish fires. Volunteer Firefighters use ladders, hydrants, hoses, fire extinguishers, and other tools to prevent fires from spreading. In some cases, a Volunteer Firefighter may have to enter a burning building to put out the flames or rescue fire victims. Drive Emergency Vehicles Volunteer Firefighters with the proper training may be called upon to drive fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. Volunteers are needed to help build a base and assemble a new storage shed at Cindy Lou's Sanctuary. This opportunity involves physical work and requires volunteers to arrive by 9:30 AM, with an option to start earlier at 8:00 AM.

Assist in the Wassamasaw Tribal Community Garden to help provide a sustainable food source for the tribe. Volunteers will engage in activities such as planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops, as well as participating in educational workshops led by elders and youth leaders.

Join the feed team to help with the daily feeding routine for the horses. Volunteers interested in serving on the feed team are welcome.

Assist in sorting and organizing donated items such as non-perishable food, clothing, and personal hygiene products. Volunteers will help ensure items are ready for distribution to women and children in need.

Assist with fundraising activities to support the rescue and rehabilitation of horses. Volunteers with experience in nonprofit fundraising are encouraged to apply.

Provide care and support to horses at the rescue. Volunteers with horse experience are needed to assist with feeding and general care.

Assist families with special needs children in accessing and enjoying tandem trikes on local bike trails. Responsibilities include helping with bike reservations, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and providing a welcoming environment for participants.

Help in the pottery studio, likely on Wednesdays from 10am to noon, assisting with pottery activities and supporting participants.

Assist with setting up, breaking down, and managing info tables at various community events held throughout the year, including pottery pop-ups and fundraisers.

Assist with maintaining garden beds, ideal for those with a green thumb. Volunteer anytime from Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm.

Help with daily activities at day camps for teens held in June. The camp runs Wednesday through Friday from 8am to 2pm.

Join members at the downtown Summerville YMCA for exercise sessions on weekdays from 1-2pm.

Join us for lunch and engage with participants. This opportunity is available Monday to Friday from 11:30am to 12:30pm, with a minimum commitment of once a month.

Engage in leisurely and recreational activities such as lawn games, bike riding, and board games every Monday from 3:30-4:30pm.

Assist with crafts, meal prep, or be a social butterfly during social nights, which vary from paint nights to holiday dances. Volunteering takes place on Wednesday evenings from 5-8pm.
