Established in 1955, we provide Fire, Rescue and BLS protection to over 15,000 residents and 39 square miles. Our largely rural district includes the drastically growing Liberty Township and half of Jackson Township under contract. Our response area includes portions of the East/West Toll Road, a near 5 mile stretch of State Road 49,and over 10 miles of US Route 6. Over the last 5 years,the department has ran an average of 745 calls. We respond under Mutual Aid agreements to 5 neighboring departments, as well as an automatic aid agreement with neighboring Westville Fire for a portion of our rural overlapping districts. | Requirements: No experience is required,but is preferred. Probationary Firefighters will be put through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Firefighter 1&2 Course through District 1. The Department requires a minimum of Mandatory Firefighter Certification to respond to Emergency Calls. For those without prior experience, your career in the fire service will start as a Probationary Firefighter while you attend the <a href="https://www.district1firetraining.com/" target="_blank">IFTS District One Fire Academy</a>. The academy meets on Thursday nights and Saturdays for six months, and is conveniently located in Saint John. Upon completion of the academy - and the acquisition of requisite state certifications - you will be inducted as a full member, and active Firefighter, of the Saint John Fire Department. After obtaining the rank of Firefighter, members will continue their education in both EMS and advanced fire disciplines over time. <br> <b><u>EMS Training</b></u> After successful completion of Fire Academy, candidates not already in possession of an EMS certification will have one year to enroll in a local, state-accredited EMS program to earn their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Both accelerated (weekday) and evening classes are available through various EMS providers in the NWI Region. All tuition will be covered by the SJFD's nonprofit foundation, so long as the candidate is an active participant in the department. For convenience of location and times, most candidates chose to enroll in the <a href="https://www.franciscanhealth.org/healthcare-professionals/education/emt-training-course-crown-point" target="_blank">EMS Academy offered through Franciscan Health Crown Point</a>. <br> <b><u>Free College Tuition</b></u> The educational opportunities don't stop with the Fire Academy, however.
