BENNET FIRE & RESCUE BASIC FIREFIGHTER JOB DESCRIPTION The Position Under leadership direction, responds to structure and wildland fires, rescues, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and hazardous materials spills as a member of Bennet Fire and Rescue. May drive, operate and perform routine maintenance on fire apparatus and various other fire and rescue related equipment during emergencies and training drills. May perform basic fire prevention, station maintenance and general housekeeping duties. May be called upon to perform rescue assignments during natural disasters such as floods and or tornados. Duties: • Perform modern fire suppression operations in a safe and effective manner, using hose lines, fire streams, raising ladders, ventilation techniques, and salvage / overhaul. • Assist in providing emergency medical care to victims of accidents, illness and injury; If you are an EMT you will be determining patient assessments through accurate collection of vital signs, administer cardio- pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and oxygen, applying bandages to control bleeding and other immediate life saving techniques. • Rescue trapped victims using tools and equipment such as jacks, hydraulic spreaders and rams, saws and porta-power. • Maintain skills and certifications by attendance at scheduled training classes and drills. • Perform routine non-emergency tasks such as cleaning and storing hose and other fire equipment; cleaning and replacing medical equipment, cleaning and maintenance of station and attending department work days as needed for the good of the organization. • Project a positive image to the public as a representative of Bennet Fire & Rescue; encourage and maintain public support for fire suppression and prevention. • Wear a pager and be available to respond to the station for emergency response or station coverage at all hours of the day or night as avalible. • May be assigned to drive and operate fire apparatus. • May be assigned as company officer, taking command of incident scene and relaying report on conditions to county dispatch. • Perform other duties as may be assigned for the good of the organization. Must Possess Ability To: Communicate effectively with the public, personnel from other agencies and other volunteers. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other members of the department. Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations at all hours of the day and night as avalible. Think clearly and decisively in stressful situations, carry out complex directions and follow orders of superiors. Work in hazardous and unfamiliar situations. Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time often in extreme weather conditions. Climb ladders, which require lifting arms above shoulder level and working at heights greater than 10 feet. Pull 100 pounds of dead weight at a distance of 50 feet. Meet and maintain physical standards required for fire and rescue work. Learn modern structural and wildland fire suppression techniques. Learn First-Aid and CPR techniques. | Requirements: Minimum 18 years of age at time of appointment. Possess a valid driver's license upon appointment. Obtain Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within first year. Possess no medical or physical disabilities that might impede the ability to perform firefighting and rescue functions.
