That means attending weekly trainings and participating in department operations. We require 24 hours of training per year for all active members. We conduct trainings on Tuesday evenings. All training and equipment is provided for free. Firefighting and rescue operations are physically demanding, and require a high degree of fitness. But if you are not very fit or are physically disabled in some way, don't count yourself out! There are many valuable roles in the fire service that might be a good fit for you. The Dorset Fire Department is in search of community driven individuals who want to assist in emergency response to incidents within Dorset VT and surrounding mutual aid towns. No prior experience is necessary! Members will respond to emergency calls including but not limited to: automated smoke/CO alarm activations, motor vehicle collisions, residential and commercial structural fires, search and rescue, woodland fires, and EMS assists. All required training can be provided free of charge to motivated individuals through the department, and the Vermont Fire Academy. There are opportunities for interior, (SCBA certified), and exterior, (scene support), firefighting roles, as well as driver/operators for fire apparatus. The Dorset Fire Department is not currently an EMS or medical first response agency and only responds to medical calls when requested for assistance by the primary responding EMS agency. There are also opportunities for volunteers to take part in fundraising, clerical work, and community relations. Members will receive a pager and access to computer aided dispatching software, (CAD), and upon receiving an emergency call respond to the station to formulate a response. Additionally the department employs a 6x6 side by side, specially outfitted for wildland firefighting and search and rescue. Assist in trapping cats for spay/neuter procedures as part of the Trap-Neuter-Return program. Volunteers will help ensure the humane capture and transport of cats to veterinary appointments.

Help us organize and restock the pantry and distribute food during the Greenwich or Cossayuna Pantry services. Pantry volunteers must participate in a pantry-specific orientation event prior to their first volunteer shift. Volunteers ride along with our driver and assist in loading, unloading, and organizing food as it is distributed across our service area. You’ll need stamina for long rides and strength for heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds)! You will have the opportunity to meet many of the people who make up CFC's food access network as well as the individuals who benefit from our work.

Help in the collection and sorting of surplus food to prevent waste and support food distribution programs. Volunteers will work with local businesses and farms to recover food that would otherwise go to waste.

The West Rutland Fire Department has been providing emergency services to the Town of West Rutland since 1891. Our Department provides fire protection, hazardous materials response, and rescue services to the residents and visitors of West Rutland and our surrounding communities through mutual aid. We are staffed with approximately 20 volunteer/call firefighters who are on call and respond when an emergency occurs. The West Rutland Fire Department is well-equipped with a fleet of 6 on-road vehicles and 1 off-road vehicle, a full compliment of modern firefighting and rescue equipment, and dedicated Firefighters who pride themselves in their skills and community service. We are housed in a modern fire station and meet regularly to further our training. The Department answers approximately 100 emergency calls for service each year. Our members enjoy a close camaraderie in a friendly environment where everyone works together to serve our community. | Requirements: 1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age; and 2. Must be physically fit and medically cleared to perform the duties of a Firefighter; and 3. Must be a legal resident of the Town of West Rutland; and 4.
