Fire Emergencies & Risk Mitigation Volunteer firefighters respond to residential, business and other structural fires. They work to suppress the fire using a number of means, including laying water lines, putting up ladders, creating necessary ventilation and entering the property, if necessary. Volunteer firefighters report to their station's captain or company officer to receive instructions. Depending on the station, volunteer firefighters may drive the fire trucks to the scene. Volunteer firefighters also operate different firefighting apparatus, including hoses, ladders, axes and saws. Emergency Situations Volunteer firefighters respond to other emergency situations, such as car accidents and natural disasters. Volunteer firefighters rescue victims and provide first aid, including CPR. Extrication may require the use of rescue tools, like the Jaws of Life, and techniques that required training and practice. Maintenance In an all-volunteer fire departments, the firefighters are responsible for maintenance and care of the fire vehicles and equipment. Maintenance duties also extend to the fire station itself; common chores include mowing the grass, attending to the landscaping and cleaning. At a fire or accident, volunteer firefighters work to clean up the scene to prevent any additional damage and may have to shovel, sweep or remove debris. Physical Because of the job's physical nature, volunteer firefighters must stay in good shape and pass a physical abilities test and medical examination before working. During a fire or emergency, a volunteer firefighter may have to knock down doors or walls, carry large pieces of debris or pick up victims and carry them to safety. Nanuet Volunteer Firefighter's serve their community and are trained to respond to a wide variety of emergency situations where life, property or the environment are at risk. Assignments vary and are based on training, physical fitness, experience and ability. Duties include but are not limited to fire suppression, fire prevention education, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, search and rescue, vehicle extrication, disaster preparedness, community service activities, public safety, response to civil disturbances and terrorism incidents. Volunteer drivers typically pick up meals at a central location and deliver them along a predetermined route directly to the homes of seniors in Rockland County. This role is essential in ensuring that homebound seniors receive their meals and a friendly greeting.

Assist with meal preparation in our commissary located in Nanuet Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m., including holidays. Volunteers help get meals out in the early mornings or clean out coolers after they are returned in the early afternoons.

Help ensure homebound recipients have a sufficient supply of non-perishable food items by collecting and packing donated shelf-stable food items into boxes.

Share personal experiences with mental illness to raise awareness and educate the community. Engage in public speaking events organized by NAMI Rockland.

Assist individuals seeking help by providing information, resources, and support over the phone. Help callers navigate mental health services and offer a listening ear.

Help protect the public in emergency situations. Assist in expanding the Pollinator Pathway by helping to plant and maintain pollinator gardens. Volunteers will work with a community of gardeners to create supportive environments for pollinators.

Provide transportation for members to and from medical appointments. Volunteers must be CAN members and provide a photocopy of their driver's license and insurance card for a routine DMV check.

Assist members with health-related situations following an injury, while recuperating from a hospital stay, or when in need of support in other medically related situations. Coordinate with Certified Drivers and CAN Do Volunteers to arrange transportation and other needs.

Oversee and coordinate volunteer activities to ensure the successful expansion of the Pollinator Pathway. Supervisors will manage volunteer schedules and provide guidance during gardening projects.
