VISIT US DURING OUR RECRUITEMENT OPEN HOUSE ON MAY 13, 2023 FROM 9 AM TO 1 PM! West Rutland Fire Department is seeking individuals to serve our community in the role of Firefighter. The West Rutland Fire Department has been providing emergency services to the Town of West Rutland since 1891. Our Department provides fire protection, hazardous materials response, and rescue services to the residents and visitors of West Rutland and our surrounding communities through mutual aid. We are staffed with approximately 20 volunteer/call firefighters who are on call and respond when an emergency occurs. The West Rutland Fire Department is well-equipped with a fleet of 6 on-road vehicles and 1 off-road vehicle, a full compliment of modern firefighting and rescue equipment, and dedicated Firefighters who pride themselves in their skills and community service. We are housed in a modern fire station and meet regularly to further our training. The Department answers approximately 100 emergency calls for service each year. Our members enjoy a close camaraderie in a friendly environment where everyone works together to serve our community. | Requirements: 1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age; and 2. Must be physically fit and medically cleared to perform the duties of a Firefighter; and 3. Must be a legal resident of the Town of West Rutland; and 4. Must possess a valid Vermont Operator’s License; and 5. Must be a citizen in good standing as proven through reference and criminal background checks. Our members must complete Firefighter I training within the first year of membership and maintain annual training as required by the Department. All personal protective equipment and training is provided at no cost to the Firefighter. That means attending weekly trainings and participating in department operations. We require 24 hours of training per year for all active members. We conduct trainings on Tuesday evenings. All training and equipment is provided for free. Firefighting and rescue operations are physically demanding, and require a high degree of fitness. But if you are not very fit or are physically disabled in some way, don't count yourself out! There are many valuable roles in the fire service that might be a good fit for you. Your duties as a firefighter will place you in contact with children, vulnerable adults, and in the homes of strangers. For this reason, applicants will be subject to a criminal background check. If you are looking for a community service role that really matters, and you have always wondered about being a firefighter, this volunteer opportunity is for you. | Requirements: To be a junior firefighter, you must be between the ages of 16 and 17 (if you are 18+ you can apply to be a full firefighter), and you must be willing to make time for the fire department. This means joining us for trainings, meetings, and maintenance work from 7-9pm on Tuesday evenings as often as possible. School must always come first– we expect all junior firefighters to fulfill all academic obligations before participating in fire department activities.
