Join one of the most progressive, dynamic volunteer fire, rescue & EMS departments in the region, providing a full stable of services including engine company, truck company, rescue squad and BLS & ALS emergency medical services. <strong>At the HVFD, you are not a member of a department, you are a member of our family.</strong> We are a busy, urban fire/EMS department bordering the nation's capital, responding to nearly 6,000 calls for service every year. We are conveniently located adjacent to the Prince George's Plaza Metro station on the green line, making the HVFD an ideal place to volunteer wherever you live in the area. Although no previous experience or training is required, you need more than just a desire to help people. You also need courage and dedication, assertiveness, and a willingness to learn new skills and face new challenges. Our service is one that calls on its members to perform hot, sweaty, dirty, strenuous work, often in uncertain and hazardous environments. Our volunteers must be team players, respecting each other’s roles and contributions. You need to be able to work on-call and to deal with occasional interruptions to your lifestyle, dropping what you’re doing at the ‘sound of the bell’ to respond to the emergency needs of your fellow citizens. A new recruit can expect to spend between 5-10 hours each week on fire company business. This entails meetings, training, emergency responses and other miscellaneous activities. Some weeks will be more and other weeks much less. The days of the week or times may vary depending on the level of activity. For those under 18, a statement of parental or legal guardian consent must accompany the application, and a parent or legal guardian must also attend an interview process.</li> <li> <strong>First Steps:</strong> New recruits must successfully pass a Prince George’s County background check and physical examination and complete the county's Volunteer Recruit School (typically 4 weeknights, including CPR).</li> <li> <strong>Flexible Duty Shifts:</strong> All Fire/EMS and EMS Only members are required to participate in our Duty Shift program. This typically includes a minimum of 24–36 hours per month mixed between weeknights and weekends.
