Placer County Fire Department (PCFD) is a combination and collaborative fire department with a mix of career and volunteer staff. We are located in Northern California, northwest of Sacramento (State Capital) and we have 16 fires stations of which 6 are all volunteer companies. We provide service to unincorporated portions of west and south Placer County. Below is the history and added details on PCFD: In 1952, the Placer County Board of Supervisors and the California Division of Forestry first entered into a relationship to leverage both State and County firefighting resources to better protect the unincorporated areas of the County. 70 years later, the Placer County Fire Department has evolved into one of the largest and most complex Fire Departments in the County. Today, the PCFD protects more than 58,000 people over 475 square miles of Placer County from the valley floor to the highest elevations of the Sierra Nevada. The PCFD service area is unique in that it not only varies in geographical diversity, but services rural, suburban, and urban populations across the region. From dense commercial and industrial areas, to a high rise casino and resort complex, to some of the most premier outdoor recreational areas in California, the PCFD is uniquely positioned to execute the highest level of emergency response. The PCFD operates nine engine companies and one truck company from eight career staffed fire stations. In addition to the career staff, reserve volunteer firefighters staff equipment out of an additional nine fire stations. In total, the PCFD responds to over 12,000 calls for service annually. The PCFD protects over $7 billion in assessed value including target hazards such as the Union Pacific Railway, the Kinder Morgan Petroleum line, and the Interstate 80 corridor through the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. PCFD operates a modern and diverse fleet of apparatus and provides both basic and advance life support emergency medical services across our territory. In addition to our fire stations, the PCFD manages and staffs the Placer County Technical Rescue Team, the Placer County Hazardous Material Response Team, and the PCFD Tactical EMS Team through an agreement with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. The PCFD Fire Marshal and Risk Reduction Bureau ensures that all new development and expansion in the county is done in concert with modern and compliant fire service standards. This bureau also ensures that investigations and ordinance compliance is followed and meet state and federal fire safety regulations. PCFD is a signatory member of the Western Placer County Fire Chiefs Association and embraces a regional and closest resource response model. PCFD resources are dispatched out of the Grass Valley Emergency Command Center and leverage the technical advances of Altaris CAD, Mobile Data Terminals and Automatic Vehicle Location to ensure that the closest resources are always dispatched to the scene of an emergency. The PCFD is a growing agency and work seamlessly with Placer County officials to ensure that new developments and expansion into the western portions of the county will have state of the art professional and regionalized fire service and EMS delivery. The PCFD is very proud of their history with Placer County and the longstanding relationship between CAL FIRE and Placer County is a shining example of Professional Cooperative Fire Protection. | Requirements: Volunteer Firefighters Welcome to the Placer County Fire Department. In the Unincorporated areas of Placer County, fire services are provided by CALFIRE and volunteer fire companies. There are six volunteer fire companies within Placer County. Five of them; Dry Creek, Fruitvale-Fowler, Thermalands, Paige and Sheridan are surrounding the Lincoln City area, the sixth volunteer company is in the Dutch Flat community. All volunteer companies in Placer County Fire are dispatched and administered by CALFIRE. Becoming a volunteer Firefighter is a rewarding experience and an excellent opportunity to serve your community. However, it involves a considerable commitment to meet and maintain training requirements and respond to incidents. Like their paid counterparts, volunteer firefighters respond to a number of different incident types including, but not limited to: emergency medical, hazardous material, technical rescue, natural disasters, wild land fires, structure fires, vehicle collisions, and public assists. We acknowledge that not everyone who wants to volunteer for their community is interested in becoming a full attack firefighter. To help meet the needs of both the volunteer fire companies and potential volunteers, Placer County Fire has established five different volunteer positions: Support Volunteer: Provide a less demanding but just as important contribution to the fire department including administration work, fund raising, and providing support to fire personnel committed to large incidents. Emergency Medical Responder: Volunteers in this position meet the training requirements to respond to designated incidents and perform specific functions as an EMS and Support Volunteer. Water Tender Operator: Volunteers in this position are certified to drive and operate a Water Tender Volunteer Firefighter: Volunteers in this position meet the training requirements to respond to all incidents as a full attack firefighter. Volunteer Firefighter Operator/Engineer: Volunteers in this position meet the training requirements to respond to all incidents as a fully trained firefighter and are certified to operate specified fire apparatus. *All candidates are encouraged to conduct a self-screening process prior to applying: Are you at least 18 years old? Are you in good health? Are you able to meet the physical demands of desired position? Do you have a criminal record? Do you have a questionable driving record? The procedures for joining a volunteer fire company are as follows: Call 530-889-0111: you will be put in contact with a CAL Fire Chief who will assess your interest, answer questions, and refer you to a Volunteer Fire Station Captain based on where you live. Or, contact your local volunteer fire station directly. Submit a “show of interest” application. Satisfactorily complete an oral interview. Submit a formal application. Attend your sponsoring volunteer company training while attending formal training for up to three consecutive months. Satisfactorily complete classroom and hands-on training as required by each position. Training is provided by CALFIRE employees and the dates and times are announced prior to each training session. You are required to attend at least 75% of the Department training meetings per quarter. The Department formal company trainings are generally two evenings per month, as well as one Saturday per month. There may be additional meetings depending on individual needs or policies. Should you be attending qualified training on fire related subjects, you may be excused from the normal Department formal training. During the hours that you are available to respond to calls, you are expected to make at least 75% of those calls per quarter. Maintain grooming standards as set forth by CAL FIRE After completing all initial training, you will be on probation for six months. Welcome and thank you for your interest in serving in your community. | Categories: Department Support, Firefighter, EMT
